Book Overview
America: Imagine a World without Her by Dinesh D’Souza reveals, from a conservative point of view, how the policies of America are being shaped by the influence of progressive thinking on the government. Mainstream progressives believe that America came to be as a result of theft. They believe the land used to settle America was stolen from Native American Indians and from the Hispanics in Mexico. Then the labor of African slaves was stolen to help build and settle the country and make it into what it has become today. Conservatives, on the other hand, believe that America was founded on the innovation and enterprise of the settlers. They believe America’s strength is based on economic liberty and capitalism.
The signing of the Constitution by the Founding Fathers brought about a new political and economic system for America. Under this new ideology, the people were to be governed by consent by leaders of their choosing instead of being governed by a king or a ruling class. Additionally, all people were declared to be equal and were granted certain rights.
After the troubled times of the 1960s when America was a country of unrest, progressives adopted the ideology of anti-colonialism. Today some progressives feel that reparations should be made to groups like the Native American Indians, the Hispanics, and the blacks as atonement for America’s crimes against them in the past. In opposition to this view, the conservatives believe that trying to pay back these groups for things done to their ancestors will only bring about additional theft against others today through unfair taxation, mandates, and regulation.
Conservatives also argue that blacks in America today have freedoms and opportunities that their ancestors did not have in Africa and that few would have in present-day Africa. Similarly, they claim that American Indians and Hispanics living in America are better off by living in the capitalist society of the United States than if they lived elsewhere or under a different government system.
Successful entrepreneurs are the ones who have empathy for others and can see their needs. They meet those needs by creating a new product or service. The entrepreneurs are then rewarded by the people purchasing their new product or service. America’s economy became strong because
