About the Author
Overview
This book is written by a licensed Professional Engineer who has taken an interest in the history of the United States Presidents and political parties. Since the author is not a political scholar, it is more of an average citizen
approach to the subject matter as opposed to what might be written by political historians.
The author has named what he believes are the greatest presidents of all time focusing on the nature and magnitude of their achievements. There is also a second list of presidents who are described as being honorable mention
. This is not to say that the presidents not making either list have not been able administrators as millions of knowledgeable U.S. citizens voted them in office. All the American presidents have been, for the most part, very capable and honorable chief executives who have served their country well.
At the beginning of this publication, is a detailed chart listing all fifty-seven U.S. presidential elections, complete with winners, losers, dates, and political parties. Following are short profiles of the presidents that are honored; short summaries of all five major political parties; and, short factual summaries of all 44 presidents. In this last section, for some of the early occupants of the White House, the author has selected a modern day president who best exemplifies his earlier counterpart.

The Eight Greatest Presidents
There have been 57 presidential elections held in the United States and 44 presidents. One president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, was elected to four terms, more than any other person. Since then, a law has been passed limiting presidents to two terms. Sixteen presidents have been elected to two terms. They are Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, Lincoln, Grant, Cleveland, McKinley, Wilson, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Bush, and Obama. Grover Cleveland was the only president to be elected to two non-consecutive terms; therefore, he is counted as president twice.
The following evaluation of the eight greatest presidents is based on the author’s opinion only and is not intended to reflect the view of any other person:
Frank Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President: No other man has had to work so diligently, for so long, under such severe troublesome times than Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He did this wearing leg braces throughout his presidency as he contacted polio earlier in his life. He is considered by the author as the greatest president to have ever served this country. FDR was the 32nd president and the only one to serve over two terms. The people loved him so dearly that he was elected to four consecutive terms. FDR beat all four of his Republican opponents with massive electoral vote count margins. FDR served during the Great Depression; during Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor; and, during Germany’s attack on Poland prompting World War II. His predecessor, Herbert Hoover, tried to take the country out of the Great Depression but was unsuccessful. Roosevelt pushed through Congress massive relief programs to help end the depression. He led the United States victoriously through the war on Japan in Asia and through the war on the Axis in Europe. He dealt successfully with more severe internal and external conflict than any other president; and, he did it all while suffering from a crippling physical impairment.
George Washington, 1st President: George Washington is believed to be a close second behind FDR as the greatest of all United States Presidents. Among other things, George Washington was a man who loved his country and commanded respect from those around him. He received all of the most important titles of his day; he was the Commander in Chief of the Army that beat the British in the Revolutionary War; he was the president of the convention that wrote the American Constitution; and, he was the first president of the United States receiving all the electoral votes for two full terms. While he was president, he settled differences with England despite his deeply divided cabinet over the treatment of that country following the Revolutionary War. Thomas Jefferson, Washington’s Secretary of State, despite having strong political differences with Washington, said of him; Never did nature and fortune combine more perfectly to make a man great.
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President: Rated right under George Washington is Abraham Lincoln who has to be considered one of the greatest of all American presidents. Lincoln, like Washington, was a self-made man receiving no formal education. Lincoln was famous for his writing, his
