Change Your Habits Change Your Life - Timothy Presley
Chapter 1
Understanding Habits
––––––––
Habits are automatic behaviors that we have developed over time to make our lives easier. We all have good and bad habits. Habits can be used to achieve success in life if we know how to use them. This book is going to teach you how to use good habits to achieve success in life.
Good habits make a great person, but bad habits make a bad person. Since we are all different, what constitutes a good habit for one person might not be a good habit for another. For example, some people like staying up late and getting little sleep while others like getting plenty of sleep every night. Some people find waking up early easier than others. Some people do not like exercising intensely while others love it and find it relaxing.
What are Habits?
Habits are how we do things without thinking. They are the actions that reduce the amount of mental effort required for us to complete our tasks. Habits are automatic, they allow us to complete tasks without having to think about each step.
How do we form habits?
To form a habit, we need to have a cue, a routine and a reward.
In more detail:
The cue is the trigger that prompts us to act in a habitual way. For example when we smell a certain food it can prompt us to eat it. Or when we see someone smoking it can prompt us to smoke. The routine is the sequence of steps that we take to reach our goal. For example, eating a chocolate cake means we have to go and buy the cake, buy sugar, flour and eggs and then cook the cake. The reward is what we get from acting on our cue. For example, eating a cake brings pleasure through sweet taste and pleasure of eating something tasty.
In order for us to form a habit there needs to be some kind of reward at the end of the routine, i.e., some sort of incentive that will drive you toward completing your actions repeatedly until they become automatic or unconscious (in other words – habits).
What are good habits?
Good habits are those that help you achieve your goals in life as well as improve yourself as a person (i.e., self-improvement). Good habits are therefore positive habits, i.e., they help you do things in life that you want to do or else improve yourself by boosting your self-confidence, self-esteem or your ability to do things.
What are bad habits?
Bad habits are those that harm you in some way, i.e., they make you or harm you in some way. Bad habits are therefore negative habits, i.e., they help you do things that you do not want to do or else they harm yourself by damaging your self-confidence, self-esteem or your ability to do
