Mental Toughness For Teen Girls - Timothy Presley
Introduction
The Unique Challenges Faced by Teenage Girls
The teenage years are challenging for most people, but finding an all-in-one answer to these issues might be helpful. The majority of people believe that one's teenage years are the most enjoyable years of their life since they are characterized by a high level of independence, enthusiasm, and enjoyment. On the other hand, this magnificent period is not devoid of any troubles. For instance, you may realize that your daughter is suddenly struggling with a number of issues typical for teenage girls, such as physical changes, their first period of menstruation, and emotional challenges.
The Unique Challenges Faced by Teenage Girls
The teenage years are a time of great uncertainty since even very insignificant difficulties can feel like insurmountable obstacles. As a parent, you have an obligation to provide emotional support and practical assistance to your daughter as she navigates the challenges of adolescence.
Appearance, education, dating, bullying, friendship, self-esteem, peer pressure, substance use, menstruation, and depression are some of the most frequent issues that girls face. This article provides an in-depth look at the top ten challenges a teenage girl faces and a potential solution to each one. Having a deeper understanding of these things will help you support and assist your little lady in the following ways:
1. Outward Manifestation
This is certainly one of the issues that top the list of concerns for every adolescent girl. It is estimated that 30.4% of all adolescent’s struggle with negative feelings about the way they look (Shameer, 2023). During this stage in life, your body is going through a period of rapid change, and you must learn to adapt. To add insult to injury, you are constantly exposed to and reminded of these figure-perfect bodies. The influence of the media and of peers also contributes to the chaos. Your child's body image can be affected by a variety of circumstances, including their family environment, their abilities and disabilities, the attitudes of their peers, and their cultural background.
2. Instruction
Your adolescent daughter must demonstrate her worth during this period by maintaining a high GPA, performing well on standardized tests, and excelling in her other academic endeavors. This puts excessive stress and pressure on your young girl, which might cause her to feel overwhelmed. It has been discovered that school or education-related stress affects 33.8% of all adolescents (Vijay et al., 2020).
3. Dating
The life of a teenager already comes with a significant number of difficulties and obstacles. The condition becomes much more severe when there is a sudden surge in the flow of sexual hormones throughout the body. You could find that your girl is developing her first crush and becoming more susceptible to romantic encounters. A significant number of young women go through the stages of healthy crushes as well as early love. However, due to factors such as peer pressure, shifting social mores, and the proliferation of sexually explicit media, sex has become more connected with romantic relationships between adolescents. Your adolescent girl will get the impression from this that sexual activity is nothing out of the ordinary in romantic relationships, even at a young age. In addition, because she is going through a period in her life that is particularly difficult to understand, it is essential for you to convey to her the significance of practicing safe sexual behavior, giving informed permission, and taking the required safety steps.
4. Bullying
One of the major concerns adolescent girls have, particularly concerning to them, is bullying. Bullying is perceived to be a significant issue by around 55% of all adolescents nowadays. Approximately 16% of school-aged children in the United States have reported experiencing cyberbullying (Anderson, 2018). This begins to have an effect on their personality as well as their actions. Your adolescent girl may also experience depression and odd behavior, such as withdrawing within herself.
5. Acquaintanceship
When you're a teenager, every relationship seems more complicated. Even the most precious of ties of friendship can occasionally be shaken to their foundation. This is due to the fact that your child's social skills are growing throughout this time. It's possible that one minute your daughter has nothing but love for her best friend, and the next, she's picking fights with her. This could lead to aggressive behavior as well as mood changes.
6. Self-Esteem
The practice of evaluating oneself, one's body, and one's appearance in relation to other girls the same age is common among teenage girls. This subtly puts pressure on them without their awareness. The physical shifts during puberty will likely cause your daughter to question her identity. She may start becoming overly self-conscious about everything she does, from the clothes she wears to the things she says. Her sense of self-worth could take a hit as a result of this.
7. Peer Pressure
Teenage girls are subjected to a great deal of pressure from their peers to act in a particular way that provides them a sense of belonging. By caving into their peers' pressure, they can feel more integrated into the group. This even causes them to start engaging in behaviors they aren't supposed to or wouldn't be interested in otherwise.
8. Substance Use
This is a significant challenge that the vast majority of adolescents, both girls and boys, are confronted with in the modern world. The use of substances has a significant influence on the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of the child, in addition to their academic achievement. Peer pressure is the primary factor leading most young women to engage in risky behaviors. Substance abuse is a coping mechanism that adolescent females turn to in order to alleviate their tension and experience a sense of internal security and assurance.
9. Menstruation
When your adolescent daughter reaches this age, she will experience menstruation for the very first time. It's possible that she'll form a lot of incorrect assumptions and questions about her menstrual cycle as time goes on.
10. Depression
Mood disorders are diagnosed in teenage girls at a two times higher rate than in teenage boys (Steingard, 2022). They experience feelings of strain and possibly depression when things do not go their way or when they do not achieve the standards their peers have established. One of the numerous things that might set off a depressive episode in a teenage girl is having poor grades. Other contributing variables include having a bad breakup, demanding parents, gaining weight, and abusing substances.
Understanding the Teenage Girl's World
A Story of a Teenage Girl
Asuma Ahuja had grown weary of hearing the same tales told over and over again about young women. Even if an exceptional girl
like Greta Thunberg or Malala Yousafzai was periodically brought up as a role model for fighting back, these women were either victims or sexualized.
We have very little understanding of the day-to-day life of girls and what life looks like for them,
says Ahuja. We have very little understanding of the day-to-day life of girls. I wanted to create a small portrait of what girlhood looks like in different places, as well as something that girls can pick up and feel seen by ... and seen by other girls elsewhere who share their own experiences,
the author explains.
Everyone is aware of the number of girls who are victims of violence and how difficult it is for many of them to get an education. Especially in the west, this is the only glimpse we receive into the everyday life of girls living in less developed countries. We don't see them as people; rather, we see them as symbols of these things,
adds Ahuja.
Merisena, who is 13 years old and lives in Haiti, often thinks about how different her life might be if she, her parents, and her eight siblings did not reside in a dangerous neighborhood. When there are problems, I wonder why we couldn't live in another country, why my family couldn't have money, especially when we are hungry, and there is a civil war in the area,
she writes in the letter. When there are problems, I wonder why we couldn't live in another country.
But she also talks about competing in chess tournaments, practicing volleyball and football, and having the thought of wanting to be a nurse
throughout her life.
Damascus, Syria's capital, is Naya's hometown, but she's been living in Berlin for the past three years. Naya states, I didn't want to leave my home country, my friends, my room, and most of all my possessions,
as she discusses her love of street dance and concerns about upcoming tests.
The 16-year-old Sattigul comes from a family of Mongolian nomads who work as herders. She writes of how she gets up early to get food for the livestock, enjoys going on hunts with an eagle, and plans to achieve certain things. One of my goals for the future is to translate foreign languages into English. That has always been my goal.
18-year-old Mandisa resides in the KwaMashu community close to Durban, South Africa, with her mother, sister, and other nieces and nephews.
When she gets older, she plans to be able to afford to purchase her mother a nice house. Becoming a successful attorney is my number one goal because I want to be independent and successful in my own right.
The South African author tells the story of another young woman who, after discovering she was pregnant, was forced to leave school but ultimately succeeded in going back. Mandisa has done some modeling, which is something that she adores, and in one of her entries in her journal, she talks about putting on her high heels in order to practice.
Ahuja insists that there must be female representation in the meeting. Masuma Ahuja provided this photograph for our use. Education is a primary concern, regardless of whether young women in countries like Sweden and the
