Topside with Dick and Jane - Naomi Muse
Chapter One
Even though Dick and I had been spending a lot of time together in Inferno, I wasn’t used to having him in my house. Not my house Topside anyway. We were expelled from Hell together, but I couldn’t help but think that was a mistake. I had reacted purely on instinct when I saved him from my father. Now, I wasn’t sure it was the right move. I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to be in a relationship with him anymore, but we were living together. Teaching him that humans weren’t bad would be hard if I kicked him out on the streets.
While I had a guest room, it had morphed into an extended junk drawer. Dick was less than impressed. He decided that it would be easier to sleep in my bed. In my room. I couldn’t have that kind of violation. I trusted him, and he betrayed me. How could I share a bed with him after that? Request denied. My condo never seemed small before. With him around, everything seemed smaller. It’s hard having a roommate and feeling alone.
Anytime we were in the same room for more than five minutes I felt like there was a blaring neon sign flashing the word awkward. Awkward wasn’t even a strong enough word for what we felt. Well, what I felt anyway. It was tense between us. It was like standing on the edge of a knife blade. We weren’t sure what the right move was.
Sometimes, I would forget that we weren’t together and moved to touch him while we were in the kitchen. Then, I would immediately freeze. We had both given up that part. We were forced together by circumstance and my father. It would be much easier if I could turn to him. But, I didn’t.
I was keeping Blaz around full-time. I used my magic turn him from stuffed dog to a real dog. It was comforting. Dick raised an eyeb.row when he noticed it, but he never said anything. What could he say? He was staying in my house rent free. I really hadn’t put enough thought into telling him he could stay with me. He had nothing but the clothes on his back.
The first thing I did was take him shopping. Explaining to him that he couldn’t have designer duds on my non-designer salary was tough. I didn’t have to work outside of the house full time, but I still had to be frugal.
Working for other people didn’t really suit me, especially while I was trying to keep my demonic side under wraps. Working in public would have my horns at the ready in less than a minute. I worked remotely as a virtual assistant. That way no one could see me if my horns came out and my eyes turned red. The hours were flexible, that made it easier to keep myself in check.
We spent some time shopping. We managed to get Dick clothes he deemed tolerable. We were trying to settle into our life not together but living together. It was an adjustment.
We had to hide those horns right away. Even if Dick didn’t go anywhere, a delivery guy could see them. Or, even worse, a neighbor. Dick was against that idea from the very first suggestion. We had such a fight.
As a manager in Inferno, horns were a status symbol. I controlled my horns with my magic, but I was half human. Full blooded demons grow their horns throughout their whole lives. Dick’s were quite impressive. They grew out of the front of his head,
