Crooked Creek - Michelle L. Levigne
#1: BITTY MOUSE AT CHRISTMAS
Bitty Mouse lives in a teapot.
The teapot is in the roots of a big hollow tree.
The big hollow tree sits on a hill above Crooked Creek.
Now, a long time ago, Bitty Mouse didn't live in the teapot in the hollow tree on the hill above Crooked Creek.
Bitty Mouse was born in the spring and he grew up all summer long. He lived with Mama Mouse and Papa Mouse and his ten brothers and eight sisters in a hole in a big corn field.
The corn field was on a farm. Big Muddy Road ran between the corn field and a Christmas tree farm. Nobody ever crossed Big Muddy Road because it was too big and too muddy.
The hole was nice because when it was hot outside, the hole was dark and cool. Bitty Mouse liked playing with his ten brothers and eight sisters. There was a lot of food to eat and all the other mice in the neighborhood were good neighbors.
Then fall came. It rains a lot in the fall. The little hole turned into a muddy hole. The muddy hole filled up with water. It turned into a pond. Bitty Mouse and his ten brothers and eight sisters and Mama Mouse and Papa Mouse had to find another place to live. They had to leave their house in the middle of a big, loud, windy storm.
Bitty Mouse got lost in the big storm! He had raindrops in his eyes and he had to stop to get them out. When he looked around, everyone was gone. He sat right down in the rain and cried.
Please, God,
Bitty Mouse prayed. Help me find my family. I'm so scared. I don't like to be alone.
An angel came down, hidden in the rain drops, and whispered in Bitty Mouse's ear. She told him God loved him and would take good care of him. She told him to be brave and try very hard.
Bitty Mouse did not see the angel. Bitty Mouse did not hear the angel. But the angel's words went straight into his heart. Bitty Mouse decided crying in the rain was silly. He just made himself more wet. He got up and started walking. He decided that if he found some place dry to stay, maybe his family would be there, too!
After a little while, Bitty Mouse found a nice dry place to stay under the branches of a little pine tree.
What do you think happened? He walked right out of the corn field and across Big Muddy Road, and right into the Christmas tree farm.
When Bitty Mouse realized what he did, he was very proud of himself. Nobody else in his family had ever crossed Big Muddy Road before. He decided he was a very brave, strong little mouse. He knew God had helped him cross Big Muddy Road.
Bitty Mouse felt good. He curled up in a big pile of pine needles and got nice and warm and cozy, and he went right to sleep.
The next morning, he heard voices. Who do you think he heard? First, he heard Mama Mouse and Papa Mouse. They were calling Bitty Mouse and his ten brothers and eight sisters. Then, he heard one of his brothers call. Then he heard a sister call.
One by one, Bitty Mouse found all his brothers and sisters and Mama Mouse and Papa Mouse. He called them and jumped up and down and waved his arms. Everybody was so happy to find each other. Nobody was lost and nobody got hurt in the big storm.
But they were on the OTHER side of the road, in the corn field. Bitty Mouse was on the Christmas tree farm side of Big Muddy Road. Big Muddy Road was awful big and wide and full of even more mud than ever because of the rain. What were they going to do? How could the other mice get across the road to Bitty Mouse?
Well, Bitty Mouse decided, he had crossed Big Muddy Road already, so he could do it again.
And he did!
He was a very muddy little mouse when he got to the other side. Everybody was so proud of him, they didn't care how dirty he was. It was a very happy mouse family that day.
Bitty Mouse decided he liked the tiny pine tree where he slept through the storm. He decided he wanted to live there. He asked his ten brothers and eight sisters and Mama Mouse and Papa Mouse to come back to the pine tree with him. But they were afraid to cross the Big Muddy Road while it was still so muddy.
Bitty Mouse wasn't afraid. He remembered that he had prayed. He knew God sent an angel to help him cross the road and find his nice, warm, dry pine tree. Bitty Mouse decided God would help him stay safe, even if the Big Muddy Road was so very muddy. So back across the road he went. He went back to visit his family every day, and to share all the food he found. He got very strong and brave with all the hard work he did, and he missed his family very much.
Please, God,
he prayed almost every night. My family doesn't have a nice home anymore. They are afraid to cross Big Muddy Road. Please help them find a new home.
Very soon, winter came, and Big Muddy Road got hard with ice. Now it was easy to cross the road because the
