A Word from the Author
I first wrote this story some time ago, and things have now changed a lot, especially with electronics and digital communication. No mobile (cell) phones, digital cameras, tablets and computers back then. So although the main story is unchanged, some things have been updated to make the adventure happen today.
Cameras changed from film to digital for everyday use in just a few short years. Most phones now have excellent cameras in them, and of course the results can be seen immediately. So for Ryan in this story, who has only ever seen digital cameras, the idea of trying out his Gran's old-fashioned camera using film is fun. And to hear that the film has to be processed before he can see if the pictures are successful, comes as a big shock!
A few things to note. In America a mother is a mom, while over on Ryan's side of the Atlantic a mother is a mum. Fathers are usually known as dad on both sides. Trainers in England are what are known as sneakers in America, and Americans call the English pavement the sidewalk. Holidays are vacations, and there are other differences, especially in the way some words are spelt. This book uses the British English spelling because that's where the adventure takes place.

Chapter One
Ryan stopped running and stared in surprise. A camera lay on the park bench, and there was no one sitting with it. He looked around. The park seemed empty. He could tell it was a good model.
Wow!
he said to himself almost silently, afraid of being overheard. Someone's left it. Forgotten all about it I expect.
Ryan turned quickly as he heard footsteps on the path. A woman with a dog was coming. Perhaps the camera was hers. No, she walked straight past, the dog pulling on its lead as though in a hurry to get home.
Ryan was also in a hurry now. In a hurry to get home with the camera. He'd wanted a camera of his own for a long time. Of course, he'd never imagined he would get one as expensive as this. Carefully he picked it up and examined it. The camera definitely looked expensive. Very expensive indeed.
Ryan started to run. He was good at running, and his teacher said he was the fastest runner they'd had in his year for a long time.
As he left the park, he stopped to look at the camera again. He studied the large screen on the back and wondered if he dared switch the camera on. Only for a moment. Just to check it worked and hadn't been left on the park bench because it was no good.
He pressed the on switch and the lens in the front moved out. A picture of the street filled the screen. The camera seemed to be working. And then Ryan knew. He'd known all along really. The camera wasn't his to keep. It was only lost.
He could try to find the owner -- or take it to the police station. If nobody called for it at the police station, he might be able to keep it. He remembered how a girl at school had found a watch once. She'd taken it to the police station, and ages later she'd been told she could keep it because no one had claimed it.
It might be the same with the camera. The person who'd lost it mightn't want it back. Ryan looked down at the shiny black casing. No, that was silly. Anyone would want a camera like this.
What you got there?
On the way into the park he'd taken no notice of four riders on two off-road motorbikes waiting by the gates. He had to go past them now.
Give it here, kid. It's too smart for you to carry round like that.
He stared at the rider on the front of the bike. His face was covered by a black visor. He sounded young. There were four riders. Two up on each bike. One looked like a girl.
The camera was theirs! No it wasn't. They'd not asked for it back. They were going to steal it!
He held it tightly and looked round for anyone who could help. Mr. Stanbury who lived in his road was walking his way.
Mr. Stanbury was a builder who looked tough. He stopped and looked at the riders. Problem?
he asked Ryan.
The riders took one look at Mr. Stanbury, started their bikes and moved off, their engines sounding like a swarm of angry bees. We'll be back,
one of them called.
It's okay,
Ryan said to his rescuer, glad to see the bikes disappear down the road. But thanks for coming at the right time. I found this camera in the park and they wanted it. It's not theirs. I don't know whose it is.
Take it to the police station,
Mr. Stanbury said. That's the thing to do.
Ryan nodded. Yes, that's what I thought.
Mr. Stanbury told Ryan to take care, and moved off.
The problem was, there wasn't a police station anywhere nearby that he could think of. Gran might know of one. His Gran lived in a turning off the long straight road opposite the park. Yes, Gran would know where to take it.
He found Gran doing the washing. She shut the door of the washing machine and switched it on. The machine started making a loud hissing sound as the water began to run in.
We can't talk in here properly,
she said to Ryan. We'd better go into the garden.
Ryan found himself being led gently by the shoulder out into the small back garden that always looked so neat and tidy. My, that's a smart camera you've got there.
Ryan felt proud of it for a moment. Then he remembered he was here for advice. Gran, it's not mine. I found it in the park. I'm going to take it to the police station.
He wasn't
