CHAPTER 1
It was Audrey Moon’s first day on campus. She expected herself to be eccentric.
She hadn’t been happy in years and now that she was finally alone, she hoped she would be.
She didn’t regret leaving behind the things she was willing to forget. Because somehow, they gave her new meaning and hope.
She was willing to start afresh.
As she stared at the foster home she was leaving getting smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror, her past with it, it made her as close as happy as she could be.
It wasn’t until she couldn’t see a glimpse of the house that she finally exhaled and breathed in the new air. The anxiety was still there, no doubt, but no longer would it weigh on her like a terrible nightmare.
She was determined not to let the past control her future. She stared ahead at the clear road as she zoomed off to nothing but the shinning hope that streamed ahead.
..........................
Aiden Cross felt indifferent on his first day at school. He always felt indifferent. His mind was always a void he wasn’t determined to fill. He was rooming with his cousin-Toby- who was the complete opposite of him in terms of personality, emotions, reality, and friends. Despite the lack of similarities, they were quite close.
They had moved in, having left their lives behind and deciding to start anew. Well, mostly Toby. Aiden was indifferent as usual.
The room wasn’t entirely big but it was better than the hollow house he had left behind with rooms emptier than his heart and nothing but depressing silence to fill them.
Toby sang to himself loudly as they moved in their belongings and for a while, Aiden wished he could share in his cousin’s glee. It wasn’t that he couldn’t but because he chose not to. It was a way he had craved his being; to be emotionally detached from anything.
Toby smiled at himself as he placed his huge speaker down by the edge of his bed and Aiden scoffed.
Aiden didn’t remember how to smile. He had never once tried it. He looked around the room, taking in his empty space except for the small bed, and then glanced at Toby’s section. While he danced gloomily, Toby’s shone brightly.
He sighed, placing his bag on his bed. This was a school year he was sure wasn’t going to change.
CHAPTER 2
Audrey heaved an exasperated sigh as she moved her luggage into her room. No one was coming to help her move in and she wasn’t expecting any help either. Her foster family (which she had left behind and was eager to forget) wouldn’t be coming either. She hoped they won’t if she wanted to live a life without fear and love without doubts and hope without restraints.
She wheeled her second luggage into her room, feeling lucky that she had a single room to herself, but deep down she wished she had a roommate; one she was sure wouldn’t leave her or make her feel lonely.
After taking in all her luggage, she moved to make her bed with a bright blue sheet and pillowcase. Into her closet, she tucked in a few clothes, separating light and heavy ones. She pulled out her shoe rack and placed her shoes in it one at a time. When everything was set to her liking, she took in her surroundings and smiled comfortably at herself. Pulling out a notebook from her bag, she placed it on the empty desk beside her bed. The desk was large and she was sure that once classes started, it wouldn’t be enough to occupy the huge medical textbooks she was going to buy.
She thought of hanging a few pictures on the wall but then decided against it. Hanging up memories meant that she would miss them when she looked at them and she wasn’t eager to. Instead, she thought of something else to hang on the wall so it wouldn’t feel too empty.
Maybe it was time to bring in her T.V.
...........
‘’Dude, your side is so boring.’’ Toby snorted beside Aiden.
Aiden looked at his side of the room. What was so boring about it? It felt practical and Aiden loved things being practical and simple. His bed was made in gray sheets, along with a gray blanket and pillowcase. His closet was stocked up with a few pieces of clothing and his sneakers tucked neatly underneath his bed. There were no pictures or posters on the wall because he felt they were not necessary. Pictures were nothing but tormenting ghosts of his past.
‘’Says the guy who hangs the poster of a half-naked girl on his wall.’’ Aiden retaliated without missing a beat. Toby’s side of the room looked like a circus with colors thrown all over. Pictures of his high school friends were hung on the wall and his bed was covered with a colorful sheet. Aiden wondered how such a clown happened to be his cousin.
‘’Say nothing bad about Rosé!’’ he said pointing at the poster and Aiden rolled his eyes in disinterest. ‘’We should get something to eat, I’m famished,’’ Toby said as he threw himself into one of his oversized hoodies .
‘’Okay,’’ Aiden replied in a completely emotionless tone. Toby noticed this and shook his head lightly, jamming his feet into his sneakers.
‘’You know, you have to brighten up a little Aiden.’’ He said halfway to the door. He opened it about to move out when the sight of a petite girl stopped him in his tracks.
‘’Shit! So sorry. I didn’t see you there.’’ Toby apologized.
Aiden looked up at the girl Toby was apologizing to and something foreign inside of him felt cracked. He couldn’t place it but he felt that this moment was going to be a significant one someday. For a while, his eyes widen as he took in the form of her; a small pretty face, strawberry blonde hair, eyes the color of summer, and a very nervous smile. And then his eyes narrowed as he chastised himself for almost allowing her to merit his attention.
But then the girl did something he had never expected her to and she once again caught his interest.
CHAPTER 3
Audrey tried not to show that she was too nervous as she approached dorm room B47. She knew the occupants of that room were boys as she had seen them earlier when they were moving in. She wasn’t necessarily scared of boys but she was anxious about meeting them. Her therapist had told her it would be best for her if she tried to once in a while initiate with the male gender. The more she did, the more her anxiety would reduce.
She stopped right in front of their door and on the other side heard one saying he was hungry. The other person answered in a somewhat stiff and robot-like way. Two boys, she mentally told herself. She would be coming face to face with two boys.
She could run now and maybe come back later but she needed to get her T.V upstairs. Breathing in, she made to knock when the door suddenly burst open almost sending her riling backward.
‘’Shit! So sorry. I didn’t see you there.’’ The boy who had opened the door said. His eyes were friendly and his smile genuine. He had dark- brown hair and one of the nicest baby blue eyes she had ever seen. She wanted to shy away but the confused look on his face told her she wouldn’t have to.
She shook her head and offered a light smile. Then reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a small notebook and a pen and began scribbling
