    SUMMARY

WHEN AN EVIL SPIRIT djinn possesses the spirit world in attempt to defeat the newborn djinn, the prince’s daughter, a watcher must hide her in the human world. Eighteen years later, the watcher, Billy, finds Emilia who has grown up as a human without any knowledge of the spirit world. He takes her back to the kingdom, which is still under Rebecca’s curse, introduces her to everyone, and tells her all about her father and her djinn side. She learns thatshe is the only one who can defeat Rebecca and lift the curse because she has a half djinn side, After a tough decision, Emilia realizes she has to help her race and begins her training which goes off to a really good start. Everyone can see that she is a natural. However, it is interrupted by Rebecca’s premature return to the kingdom. Everyone rushes out to the streets to fight her and her army. After using her spirit magic to try to defeat the army, Emilia comes face to face against Rebecca. She learns that Rebecca is, in fact, her mother and becomes temporarily weakened. Billy tries to take Emilia away, thinking that it’s all over, until Emilia notices The Door to the human world and comes up with the plan to push Rebecca through, where her powers won’t exist.

They push Rebecca through The Door. There she has no magic, and even if she can’t go back to her world without help, she can still continue to exist in the human world. However, the curse has not been lifted because her magic remains in the spirit world - essentially The Door has just separated her from her magic. Her army vanishes, running away when they think Rebecca has been destroyed, but they also still exist, some of them just as bad as her. Some of the Kingdom aren’t happy with Billy and the palace - there is unrest and questions over Billy’s ability to run the place. Emilia is unhappy that no one told her about her mother.

There are rumors that some Rebecca’s army has gone to the human world to try and find her although they, supposedly, can’t come back. They manage to bring magic into the human world becausethey find a loophole to get through The Door with it. They begin causing havoc in the human world, whilst the spirit world is still under curse and destruction from the remaining army that was avenging the kingdom. Everyone realizes that they will have to go and get Rebecca back because the only way to stop this is to defeat her properly. Emilia knows she will not be strong enough to kill her, despite learning much more about her djinn side throughout this time.

A couple of magical spirits, allies, from the human world shows up at the palace, unexpectedly and tells them that the human world is suffering because of Rebecca and her army. They advise Emilia and Billy that they need to seek other djinns and pure spirits to help them defeat her. Therefore, theygo travelling to different kingdoms in search of more spirit magic to build their army and prepare it for the big battle. They meet people along the way that join their group. On their way back, Emilia visits the human world to see for herself the destruction. She also has a conversation with Rebecca about her heritage. When Emilia returns to the Kingdom, the others tell her that a group within the Kingdom has been acting as spies for Rebecca that’s when Emilia realizes how manipulative she is, but still knows there’s truth in what she told her. She struggles with everything that Rebecca has told her. Rebecca comes back to the kingdom, and there begins the final battle between the kingdoms and Rebecca’s army.

    PROLOGUE

EVERYONE WAS RUNNING. The streets were in chaos. The sky had transformed; where a minute ago it had been a bright sunshine, it was now stained with a terrible navy that was darkening by every second, rapidly swallowing the day with every cloud. Screams penetrated through the darkness as the wind picked up, whipping and screeching. It possessed every ear in the street, so no one could hear anything apart from the invasive thundering in their heads, and the desperate cries of people. It was intensified so that every scream, every cry, was forced into everyone’s mind with every whip of the wind. The temperature had dropped drastically as everyone felt icy shivers coursing through their bodies. The crowd seemed momentarily stunned into immobility by the sudden cold that was engulfing them.

It was all Billy could do: not to collapse, but he knew he had to keep going. He wanted to crouch like a small child with his hands over his head and cry. But he was not a child. He was a grown man, and one with the instincts of a watcher. It was now nearly impossible for Billy to make out his surroundings. Indeed, several people had given up and stopped moving after falling over each other in their attempts to run. Billy felt bodies on the ground. He could make out people crouching, clearly wanting to seek safety close to the earth. Others were still running, with no real sense of direction. Billy searched through the crowd. He knew they couldn’t have gone far. He would never let usually them get out of his sight, especially not the baby. Billy rubbed his face in attempt to see more clearly as he tried to make out the shapes around him. His vision went temporarily blurry as he felt hot water seeping into his eyes. He could taste salt on his face. Whether from tears, sweat or the spray from the distant ocean, he didn’t care, he just wiped them away impatiently and pushed his red hair away from his face. He looked around, screwing his eyes in a desperate attempt to stretch his gaze further. He couldn’t lose concentration, he had to remain calm.

He spotted them, the prince and his baby. He waded his way through the crowd to the pair who were hunched up beside a turned over car, seeking shelter from the weather and the mass of people.

Are you okay? Billy said, panting.

Billy! Billy thank god! It’s her, Billy. It’s her, I know it, the prince said. He looked panic-stricken. There was a trickle of blood running down his face.

Boss, we need to get you inside. We need to get you –

Listen Billy, the prince interrupted, you need to take Emilia. Take Emilia and run.

What? No. I can’t leave you!

BILLY! We prepared for this. We knew this day might come. You know what I have to do. Take Emilia now, you know the plan. Do it, now! The prince was getting desperate, pulling on Billy’s robe. Promise me, Billy. Promise me you will do as I have asked; everything must go according to the plan... EVERYTHING.

It broke Billy’s heart to see him like this. Amongst all the surrounding chaos, he felt that familiar feeling that it was him and the prince, no one else around them. He looked into the deep, brown eyes and he knew he couldn’t refuse, not because of his duty as a watcher, but because of his intense respect and devotion to the prince.

Ok, Billy said. He tried to keep his voice steady, worried if he said anymore, he would crack, and he would never be able to stop. He believed in the prince, but he knew deep down that he would never see him again. Billy looked away. He couldn’t look the prince in the eye any longer. He had to keep it together, for the baby’s sake, for Emilia’s sake.

The prince gently passed his daughter to Billy whose arms were ready. For that moment, Billy and the prince were touching, bonded by the baby between their arms. Then Billy was holding her, bringing her tightly to his chest. He felt her rapid breathing against his own body. Billy looked back at the prince, directly into his face. The prince looked back.

I’ll be okay, the prince said. And their eyes met once more.

Billy knew these were empty words, but he went along with it. He put on the show. The prince looked once more at his baby girl, gently stroking her tiny head. Billy heard the prince’s whispered goodbyes, although they were barely discernible over the fierce wind.

Yeah, of course you will, boss. I’ll - I’ll see you soon, yeah.

The prince turned away, and for a second Billy was glad of it. He didn’t think he could look at him any longer. He watched as the prince ran quickly into the night, watched as he was swallowed into the darkness. Billy looked down at the baby and gritted his teeth. He had a job to do. He had to pull himself together. Emilia was his priority now.

He turned his cloak up to the wind, wrapping Emilia tightly to protect her from the elements, and began to run. He was, in all accounts, an excellent runner. This was part of his instinct as a watcher, a trait that he was born with. And it was, he knew, crucial in this moment. It was what gave him the advantage when they had put the plan in place. It was essential that, if the evil spirit Rebecca showed up, today, Billy would get Emilia to the safe place as quickly as possible. Time was of the essence as the prince couldn’t hold off Rebecca for long. He was, after all, not much more powerful than a mortal. And Rebecca, well, she had the full power at her disposal as an evil djinn. It was an obvious outcome. And once she defeated the prince, she would once more be after the baby.

Billy reckoned he had about 10 minutes to make it to The Door before he would feel the terrible wrath of Rebecca on himself. All around him people were falling, screaming, desperate to find some form of shelter. It pained him to run past them without stopping to help, but he knew he had to keep going. Not long now. He kept running, jumping over cars, people - he did not know what. All this time, he
