    The 5 Step-Method - Ronny Oosterling

    Introduction

Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby

    – Ruth E. Renkel

Living with anxiety is one of the most terrible experiences you can have in life. If you’re constantly living with anxiety, panic, stress and worry, it often feels more like survival than actually living. You’re constantly in your head, experiencing frightening physical sensations, which can trigger further anxiety and worry. You wish you could turn your mind off for a moment, but it seems the harder you try to stop your anxious thoughts, the harder they come back. You want to do so much, but every day when you wake up there is Mister anxiety again. Living with anxiety is extremely frustrating and exhausting. You wouldn't want to wish it for your worst enemy. Yet so many people suffer from anxiety every day. Sometimes it doesn’t seem like it because people like to keep this hidden. Nobody wants to show that there is something ‘wrong’ with him or her, when anxiety is actually the most normal thing in the world. Anxiety is normal and everyone experiences it every now and then. The only difference is that some people experience it sometimes and some people suffer from it on a daily basis.

What can feel very lonely is when people don't understand you. You get responses like ‘take a breath and take it easy’ or ‘yes, that's the stress dude, it will be fine again’. These responses are well-intentioned, but they only make you feel more misunderstood. Not many people talk about it openly and because of this, you quickly get the feeling that something is wrong with you. I want you to know for now that you don't have to worry. Anxiety is normal, and with the right approach you can regain control of your anxiety. I know that you sometimes feel completely out of control and find your thoughts so strange, scary and shocking, but this too is a normal part of experiencing anxiety. It's okay not to feel so good right now; all those months and years have weighed on you and it may have been a while since you really felt like yourself. There's nothing wrong with you, this is a phase in your life that you go through- nothing more and nothing less. This will also pass, trust me on that! You’re now full of stress hormones and you feel like you’re losing control, but that isn't going to happen, you’re just experiencing anxiety. If you have had a period of anxiety, it’s because your body is full of stress hormones, which make you feel cut off from the world and may even make everything seem a bit strange. Virtually anyone who suffers from persistent anxiety thinks he or she has a serious health problem or that he or she is losing control. You're just fine and there's nothing going on but anxiety.

Of course, always make sure to get yourself checked if you have health problems, but it’s almost certain that you just suffer from anxiety. If you’re diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, trust it and don’t keep checking yourself to see if there is something more going on.

    You're Perfectly Normal

I will go straight to the point, you’re not unique and I don’t mean this wrong. There are an awful lot of people in the world who suffer from anxiety. You’re not the only one going through this, even though it sometimes feels like it, because the sensations you experience can be so weird. This quickly gives you the feeling that what you’re going through is special in a negative way. This can and is a very scary thought, but I want to reassure you right now: you’re just normal. What you’re going through is normal and how you feel is normal. In America alone, there are around 40 million people who suffer from an anxiety disorder. This is nearly 20% of the entire US population. There are millions of healthy people who suffer from anxiety symptoms and a large proportion of these people think they are going through something unique, which creates even more anxious thoughts. It provides an enormous relief, the moment you fully realize that the anxiety and all those additional symptoms are normal. You probably already feel some weight falling off your shoulders.

I don't like to use the word ‘anxiety disorder’ because this sounds like you’re mentally ill, when in fact you’re completely normal. I’m using this term only to make it clear to you what I’m talking about. In fact, I've come to hate this term because of my visits to the doctor. When I was stuck in a phase where I was very anxious, I regularly visited the doctor and therapist for help. At one point I began to dread these visits more and more because it felt like I had a unique ‘disorder’. Terms like ‘anxiety disorder’ and ‘OCD’ were thrown at my head and it felt like I was being labeled as crazy or a special case. When I looked at the packaging of the medicines I was given, it said ‘antipsychotics’, which filled me with a lot of doubts and anxiety.

‘Is there really something wrong with me?’

‘Do I have something bad and unique?’

‘Do I have a more concerning mental problem?’

    ‘Will this ever go away?’

I was plagued daily by many more of these questions. Doctors use labels so they can diagnose you and that's it. It's just helpful for doctors, but you shouldn't identify with these labels. It’s just a phase that you go through and it will eventually pass. I say this because I want you to print this in your mind; it will pass and no matter how bad you’re experiencing it right now. You’re a normal person who, like 20% of the population, goes through a phase. If someone told me from the beginning that
