Introduction
It is natural to be sad or down at times. We all feel these human emotions, which are simply reactions to the difficulties and obstacles of life. We can get sad for various reasons; perhaps we have argued with a friend, we have broken up with a partner, or a good friend of ours has moved to another place. We can feel disappointed that we did poorly on an exam or discouraged that our team isn’t coming out of its slump of losing game after game. Most of the time, people get over these feelings with a little time and care. But depression goes a step forward; it is more than feeling sad, down, or low on several occasions. Depression is an intense mood that involves sadness, despair, or hopelessness and lasts for a longer time. Depression doesn't affect only a person's mood; it also affects his or her thoughts. It interferes with perceiving and enjoying the good things in life. It reduces one’s energy and motivation for the usual activities of life.
When it seems like depression is a strong force to get over, a greater power can pull down the stronghold of depression. This is the power of God. Victims of depression see it as a dark phase, and dealing with depression can be very scary. However, God's power can help you overcome it. With God on your side, you can overcome toxic realities and find the strength you need to weather the storm as you trust Him through the journey.
The Path Out of the Dark Phase is a practical guide to understanding the power of God in helping you overcome depression. It is a blueprint that takes you through the process of building a meaningful life against all odds.

Chapter One
The Nature of Depression
Depression is a medical disease that precedes recorded history. It presents as a range or display of certain physical symptoms, especially mood disorders. One of its key traits is the disruption of one's emotions or feelings. It can also come with extreme anxiety, worry, or sorrow. Research has shown that almost 20% of adults will have a mood disorder, and 8% of adults will have a major depressive order. The severe form of major depressive disorder is known as a mood disorder. The leading cause of premature death among people aged 18 to 44 is depression. It is anticipated to be the number two leading cause of mind impairment for people of all ages. The American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders states that the identification of depression in a person or its diagnosis is based on two principal symptoms:
1. Persistent and prevalent low mood
2. Loss of interest or pleasure in one's usual activities.
When these depressive symptoms interfere with normal daily activities and carry on for at least two weeks, they are considered to be of clinical significance, in which case a diagnosis of a depressive disorder may be made. The overall prevalence of mental and behavioral disorders does not seem to be different between men and women.
It has been estimated that 100 million individuals in the world suffer from depression. These people then affect three times as many other people during their illness. More than 60% of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression. More than 24 million people are depressed, and 30% of all clinically depressed people attempt suicide; half of them eventually die by suicide.
The cost of depression to society is high. People believe that
