Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to my father Macarthur Chandler 1942-2014. By the end of his life we had grown so much closer and loved each other dearly and could say so. I’m also glad I was able to share with him a very special part of my life before he passed. For all the good times, the bad times, the times of laughter, the times of pain and struggle, the times of uniting together and the times of discourse, father here’s to you giving them all hell, and loving them all dearly. I also want to dedicate this book to my mother LaVerne Chandler and thank her for everything she has done to take care of me all throughout my life. I couldn’t have made it at all without her, and can’t imagine this world without her in it! She’s my everything!
Who I Am and What You’re Getting
Who am I? That’s a good question. I think I’ve spent my life trying to answer that, and up to this date, here is my answer. I’m just a regular person like you. I’m someone who’s gone through pain, joy, curiosity, experimentation, seeking, and discovering. Sometimes I think I was given a bad shot right from the beginning because I was diagnosed with Sickle Cell SC disease at birth, but then again that’s part of my story. We can also define me by my double minority situation living as a gay/straight, black man. We could also define me by my life as a Christian. We could say my whole life has been shaped through all I experienced as a child, or the way I learned how to love because of that. There also was a lot of joys in my life as a child and as an adult. Well, how about we just say that I am the sum of all these parts and hopefully through the telling of my innermost thoughts and stories through poetry and short reflections I hope you can relate and learn something through me. This is not going to be your typical book as I am choosing to express my thoughts to you on two different levels. One of the ways I will communicate with you all is through short contemplative thoughts (reflections), and the second way is through my poetry.
I feel that communicating to you through short thoughts gives you insight into how I think. Then by communicating to you through my poetry will give you insight into how I feel. I hope the combination of the two will give you something concrete and introspective to latch onto while you go through your own daily trials and tribulations and inspire you to do a little better in life than I have! So let’s go!
Let Me Tell You A Lil Bit About Love (Reflection)
As I write these words I pray you’ll read them and take them to heart. Over my lifetime I’ve been lucky enough to love someone more than once, and that being said I’ve come to know a bit about Love. Love is one of my best friends, so sit and let me tell you a little about love. Love is the most beautiful sight you’ll ever see in your life. You’ll be a lucky one when Love chooses to visit you.
Days will go by and you’ll continue to spend more and more time with Love. You’ll begin to grow closer to love by knowing Love. Love will begin to get closer to you. Love begins to make you happy and accordingly you develop a need for love. You never want Love to go away. Then you begin to call upon Love every day. You start to pray with and for Love. You begin to love Love. Love becomes a part of you, and you carry love with you every day wherever you go.
Some of the good things about Love is that Love will love you. Love will sit with you, talk with you, and Love will go on walks with you. Love will care for you and bring you many gifts in life without even realizing Love is a gift unto you itself. Love will sit at your bedside when you’re sick. Love will grow to love the things you do even though Love may not love them. The tricky thing about Love is that love is hard work. You have to love Love enough to make love last and keep love alive. Also, once Love is with you, Love is always challenging you to be more.
Love can cause you pain. Love can hurt you to the core, and you can hurt Love back, but if Love and the love you have is real then all other things pale in comparison to Love because Love NEVER leaves. Love always stays. Love changes, but Love always stays. You see, you can get rid of a lot of people and things in this world, but Love, love that’s real, you can’t shake Love. Even though you may go through a lot of hard times, crazy feelings, and experiences, Love never leaves. Love goes through it ALL with you.
