    The Spirit

Let’s turn to the Holy Spirit chapter in Corinthians. The Holy Spirit is our teacher. If you have not learned already, you need to learn how to let the Holy Spirit teach you. That is not an easy thing to do, because we are geared to learn with our mind. Now we must learn with our spirit. As long as you read and study the Bible as you would a textbook, you will only get information, the surface manna. You will not learn to know the Lord. Learning how to be taught by the Holy Spirit is a whole different ballgame. The Holy Spirit will teach you words of truth. When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth … He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you. John 16:13, 14. That is a Word you can bank on.

Another important ministry of the Holy Spirit is to bring us under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Acts 2:36 says: God has made that same Jesus, whom you have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Most Christians know Jesus as the Savior from their sins, but while they call Him Lord, they usually do not know Him as Lord. To know Him as Lord goes beyond knowing Him as Savior. The job of the Holy Spirit is to bring you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ so that He becomes the Lord over your life, in your life, and through your life. In John 21:15-19 Jesus asked Peter three times, Do you love Me? Peter answered each time, You know that I love You. Then Jesus said to him, Peter, when you were young you girded yourself and went the way that you would. But when you grow old, or become mature, another will gird you and lead you in a way that you would not. In other words, a young Christian is concerned about what he wants and has not yet learned how to submit himself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. But when a Christian becomes mature, he girds himself with the Lordship of Jesus Christ and is led in directions he would not have gone himself. It takes more maturing for a Christian to learn that the Lord has a plan for his life. It takes a lot more maturing for him to learn what that plan is, and then more maturing to choose God’s will over his own, and it takes even more maturing to learn how to live in submission to His Lordship. It is then that you really know Him as Lord!

The Holy Spirit’s job is to teach you, so learn how to let Him do that. It is His job to lead you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ; let Him lead you in that direction. Learn how to detect the anointing. Many Christians feel they can but really cannot. Christians, in general, are very soulish; they will often think a soulish spirit is the anointing. Just because someone is speaking in tongues, for example, doesn’t necessarily mean it is anointed. You must be able to discern the spirit on the words spoken.

In 2 Corinthians 11 Paul said, Satan transforms himself into an apostle of Christ. Even his ministers will transform themselves into ministers of Christ. In other words, Paul is saying there will be deception and the deception will come in the realm of Christian teachings. You must understand what I am saying. Most people check to see if they believe a doctrine or if the teaching is correct. It could be correct teaching; it could be very scriptural, and yet there could be a false spirit that would lead you astray. More people are led astray by correct teachings than by incorrect. The reason that is true is because there is a wrong spirit riding on the words. Therefore, we have to learn how to discern what kind of spirit is riding on the words. If it is a living word, then the presence of Christ is in the word spoken. But just because it is accurate or scriptural does not mean the presence of Christ is in it. That is not the determining factor. The determining factor is: Can you discern the Spirit of the Lord? That is important. You do not have to learn how to discern the false or demonic presence. Learn how to detect the presence of the Lord. If you do, then you will see the false easily because of the contrast.

I Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual [gifts], brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Notice that the word gifts is in brackets. It was added by the translators. The correct reading is: Now concerning spirituals…. Fundamentalist Christians make an issue over adding or taking away from the Word. The translators of the Scriptures, though, did not have any problem with that at all. They will add a little here and take away a little there, and that is another reason why you need to learn how to be taught by the Holy Spirit. There have been a number of times that the Holy Spirit has told me, That is not correct. So, I pull out my Greek and Hebrew books and find that the Holy Spirit is right. I was hearing correctly. Learn to be led.

I Corinthians 12:2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as you were led.

Paul was speaking to the Corinthians who were Greeks. They were very intellectual. They would gather on Mars Hill and debate back and forth new teachings and sayings. The Greek word for idols is eidolon = images. Dumb here means voiceless. It doesn’t have anything to do with their mental activity. It means to be voiceless; you were carried away by voiceless images. In other words, Paul is saying, "You were Gentiles and
