On the day of Pentecost, the disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke with other tongues. The other tongues were Spirit utterances, from the Greek word apophtheggomai. Many have understood this to mean that God only enabled them to speak in the known languages of the people who were there that day, but it was more than that. The words the disciples spoke carried the anointing of the Holy Spirit they had received! This book will help give a greater understanding of Spirit utterance.

Spirit Utterance

As you can see from the title we are talking about Spirit utterance. If you will work with me, I think you will have a greater understanding of Spirit utterance. We are going to do a word study that begins in Acts chapter two. This particular Greek word is only found in three places: two times in the second chapter of Acts and once in chapter twenty-six. The word is apophtheggomai. Don't try to pronounce it, but do give attention to understanding what it means.

Acts 2:1 And when the Day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

This verse is loaded with good things to talk about, and we will probably be coming back to it later. For now, though, we merely want to know where we are. The 120 disciples were in an upper room worshiping the Lord and praying (Acts 1:13-14). So, on the Day of Pentecost they were all with one accord in one place; that is, they were all in one place spiritually.

Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

The Holy Spirit rushed in like a mighty wind and filled all the house and the disciples.

Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Tongues of fire rested on each of them.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This is the verse where we first find our Greek word of interest. The Greek word apophtheggomai here is translated utterance.  The disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke with other tongues. The other tongues were Spirit utterances. The people who heard them said, Are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Acts 2:7-8. Many have understood this to mean that God only enabled them to speak in the known languages of the people who were there that day. They did speak in those languages, but it was more than that.
