(Excerpts from #5: Death at the Dinner Party)

When an unknown man gets gunned down right under their noses during a dinner party, the entire CB-CID team become ‘persons of interest’ in the murder investigation, as they were all present at the crime scene. Raunak and Samaira decide to investigate the case on their own. They soon find out that someone from their table had committed the murder.

To make things twisted, the dead man’s mobile locations are found to be the same as Raunak’s the entire week before his murder. Had he been following Raunak? Why?

Samaira puts forth a theory that the dead man had something important to tell Raunak, and that’s why he’d been following him around. When they find out the location of the dead man’s wife, and get to meet her, she tells them that her husband, Venkat had been following Raunak discreetly to talk about the death of their only son, Shyam.

She further tells him that Shyam was a social activist who raised his voice against any delinquency that questioned humanity. His mother swears that Shyam had so many enemies, and that anyone could have killed him. However, she remarks that the Andheri police had closed his case immediately, as if they were forced to do so.

Raunak immediately narrows down Shyam’s father’s gunman to be Inspector Pratyush Verma, who had joined their dinner party – the same man who handled Shyam’s case! However, when Raunak and Samaira reach Pratyush’s house, he lays lifeless beside his bed – a single gunshot wound to his head.

A note is stuck on the wardrobe – a personalised letter addressed to Raunak from Azazel! The same assassin Raunak is terrified of. The note threatens Raunak to back off the case and never ask questions about Shyam or his father’s murders.

Let’s get this damn assassin this time. Samaira said, her voice loud.

He is more than just an assassin. He is big, so big. We can’t reach him. Raunak’s voice was filled with terror.

So? Wait, are you telling me that you are about to listen this bloodsucker Azazel and not going to investigate Venkat and his son’s death?

    Yes, Raunak replied immediately.

With that, he pulled the note from the door, tore it and put it in his pocket.

What are you doing? said Samaira, shocked. "This is the only evidence which would lead us to him. We can give it for handwriting analysis. We can test it for fingerprints. We can get him
