The house looked peaceful from the outside. The awning living room revealed itself pleasingly through the big glass door. Nothing seemed out of order inside the house. Everything was neatly arranged, the way it should be. But there was not a soul in sight.

The things in the kitchen lay haphazardly, in contrast to the extremely spotless living room. The knives were thrown on the floor, the plates were scattered and broken, liquids were spilled on the counter top, the oven was dislodged from its original place, and the food was scattered all over the place. The whole kitchen was a total mess, but every little thing that made up the mess lay at ease, quietly, as if they were meant to be that way.

The kitchen window had a closely packed grill. The openings were so close that one opening in the grid was only the size of the wooden handle of a kitchen knife. So much for the fear of thieves!

The back of a kitchen knife was attached tight to one opening in the grill, such that the blade was pointing inwards and its wooden butt on the outside. A man’s nape of the neck was plunged into the knife, and he stood there unobtrusively, his torso resting on the counter top. His feet on the floor were loose, but he didn’t fall down as the knife held him tight by his neck.

But still, even when the man was lifeless and long gone, he looked peaceful, calm and happy…as if he was meant to be that way.

And for hell’s sake, Raunak did as he was
