    PREFACE

    ––––––––

This Volume of short stories came to be planted in my heart in November 2019 one morning while leading the assembly at the school where I worked as a relief and volunteer remedial teacher in Rustenburg, South Africa.

I felt inspired to come up with a collection of interesting short stories that would help encourage young people everywhere and their loved ones to read their Bibles more and also help children to improve their reading skills.

Sadly, the school of which I speak of, Talitha Koum Combined Academy, closed down in June 2020 due to complications from the National Lockdown, but I resolved to press on to fulfill the promise I made to the Talitha children. This is the result.

These stories will be enjoyed by children of middle school age upwards and the young at  heart,  while The Old Lady and the Beggar will appeal to the little ones.

I will always have fond memories of the children I taught. It’s my prayer my kids that your future may be bright. God bless the Talitha teachers.

    THE MAN THE FIRM FORGOT

    BASED ON Ecclesiastes Chapter 9, Verses 14 – 17

There was a small city with only a few people living in it, and a great king came and besieged it. There was in the city a wise man, very poor, and he knew what to do to save the city, and so it was rescued. But afterwards, no one thought any more about him. Then I realized that though wisdom is better than strength, nevertheless, if the wise man is poor, he will be despised, and what he says will not be appreciated. But even so, the quiet words of a wise man are better than the shout of a king of fools. TLB

Hello! I’m looking for the office of Mr. Nathan Brown?

In response, a man dressed in grey overalls looked around. In a kind voice, he said, Go right through that door over there to the receptionist, and she will help you.

Thanks. The speaker, a young parcel delivery man, went on his way carrying two fairly large packages.  The man in the grey overalls went back to his task of installing a new lock on a door.

His name was Richard, and he worked as a cleaner and handyman for Mr. Brown.

Mr. Brown was the head of a busy accounting firm and was the boss of a staff of eleven people. Richard had worked for him for eight years.

During that time Mr. Brown had never known him to utter a harsh word. In fact, sometimes when he was stressed out over deadlines, Richard would give him a quiet word of encouragement and he would feel a lot better.

‘If only Richard were a bit more educated,’ Mr. Brown thought to himself sometimes, ‘I would employ him in a much better position. I couldn’t desire a more wiser and trustworthy employee, but alas, he doesn’t have good qualifications.’

Richard liked Mr. Brown, and prayed for the success of his business in the quiet of his home. Sometimes some of Mr. Brown’s other employees would make some snide remark like, Don’t trust too much in people like Richard, when you least expect it one morning you’ll come to work and find all the computers gone and he will be nowhere to be found!  I don’t trust laborers and I never leave my phone lying around, you just never know. Mr. Brown would simply say, Not Richard.

In the past he had experienced firing staff members who had tried cheating him behind his back, trying to make deals with his clients worth large sums of money.
