    CHAPTER ONE

I am a recent widow. I will not go into my life story. Suffice it to say that my husband had a massive heart attack in his mistress’s bed, which ended in his demise. The police came to inform me of this happening. The shock was not so much of his death, as was the mistress business. It is a wound I will carry forever. When you think you are doing everything to make a good marriage, to make your man happy, then find out it isn’t enough, that will give you food for thought for a long time.

About three days later, I received a phone call from a Mr. Goodwin. He informed me he was my husband’s solicitor. He had his last will and testament. There were also many important documents that were at my disposal. He would like to pay a visit and be of any help to me that I needed. I thought for a moment and then said yes and made an appointment for the next day.

Mr. Goodwin, a short wiry man with thick glasses and a mustache, arrived on time. His briefcase was heavy, and he asked if he could put it on the dining room table.

Firstly, I wish to give you my condolences, he said as he spread the opened case and its contents around. He also had a small calculator, which he placed close by. My dear lady, this is not a pleasant duty. As I can see from my surroundings, you have lived very frugally when there was no need. Your husband was a very wealthy individual. I am sure you did not share in this information. Today, I will make sure that everything comes to light. I have no idea why your husband was so secretive, but the end result is what counts. He then began reading the will. "Firstly, I leave the house that Debra lives in to her. The car she drives and five hundred thousand dollars.

Secondly, after all bills and necessary things have been taken care of, I leave my loving wife the remainder of my estate, with the wish that she finally has the chance to learn to enjoy herself and life around her. I hope she will forgive me my ways. I am very sorry for many of the things I didn’t do with and for her. In my way, I cared for the home she made and the loving ways she treated me.

Mr. Goodwin began pulling out papers. He said, This is an insurance policy for one million, with you as the beneficiary. There is a portfolio in excess of two million dollars. This is all your inheritance, a 401K, a Roth retirement, and an IRA, they are all part of your estate. Just as soon as I enter it all into probate, you can begin using any part of or all if you want. Oh, yes, I forgot his pension. You are a very wealthy woman. If I can help you in any way, all you have to do is call. You will be my prime client. Nothing and no one will get in the way if you need me.

You are very kind, Mr. Goodwin. I am sure if my husband trusted you, then I should trust you. I will begin calling you just as soon as the burial is over. Since I have no clear idea what I would or could do with this large amount of money, we will leave everything as is. You may inform this Debra, whoever she is, of her good fortune. I do not want to know who she is or anything about her. I am going to have to mull this situation over in my head for a long time. I will continue to live here and run things exactly as I have. I guess you could advance me some cash so I do not have to pinch as I did prior to my husband’s death.

Days turned into weeks and weeks into two months when I received a call from Mr. Goodwin.

"Look here, my sweet lady. You have better get yourself on track. We have a lot to talk about. I want you to go out shopping and buy a new wardrobe. I have sent you a new credit card. With this card, you can buy anything your heart desires. Don’t forget the shoes, undies, you will need plenty of them. I am a married man and I know how women shop. Go to town. Then I want you dressed in your finery and meet me for lunch at Marble Tower. I will give you three days to accomplish this
