    Smoking Hot

Carrie played the bad girl from the moment I saw her. She played the party girl, the wild one. When I walked out onto the bar's patio, she was putting on a bisexual routine to excite the boys, with her hand up her friend's shirt, kissing the girl's neck. They made a hot little combo, with Carrie's black hair in a pixie cut contrasting with the other girl's long blonde locks. They were there with the people I had come to meet, but it seemed a bit too much, a bit too obnoxiously attention-seeking. I said Hello to my friends, and went back inside and stood at the bar to drink a beer.

A few minutes later, Carrie came in with Britt, one of the friends I had come to meet. The two of them slid up next to me, and Britt asked why I was standing alone inside when the party was outside.

    Just warming up, I said.

Right. Except it's not cold out. Britt gave me a knowing smile. She'd been around me long enough to know how standoffish I can be. She introduced Carrie, who gave me her hand to shake.

Are you doing a shot with us? Carrie asked. She was a sexy girl, dressed in a short black skirt and white halter-top. Tanned, black-haired and bright-eyed, she would turn heads in any room. I agreed to have one of whatever they were drinking.

Britt ordered tequila, and we knocked them back with salt and lemon wedges. It seemed silly to me, like acting out an old college ritual, but I played along.

Britt headed back outside, and Carrie took my hand. Come with us, she said. Come join the party.

I went along with her. Outside, in the fresh night air, she opened her purse and pulled out her cigarettes. Do you smoke? she asked.

No. Well, I used to. I quit about a year ago.

Oh. Good for you. She put a cigarette between her lips and lit it with a little pink lighter.

I'd like to quit. How did you do it?

I shrugged. It took several tries. First I stopped buying packs but kept on bumming smokes off people. I had to quit doing that when I realized I was driving everyone around me crazy. My girlfriend smoked, so splitting up with her helped. I paused and thought about how vicious that sounded. We didn't break up over smoking. I just mean that it was an unexpected benefit.

Well, she said, taking a drag and exhaling, It's nice that something positive can come from a breakup.

Yeah. I took a sip from my beer.

So, you know Britt? she asked.

I used to work with her at a magazine. You?

    I knew her at school.

Are you still in school? I asked.

No, she laughed. Do I look like a student? No, I'm done. I model a bit now. Not much. I'm still figuring out what I'm doing.

    What kind of modeling?

For art classes, mostly. I've done some nude shoots for Internet sites, but only when I'm getting really tight for money. That's not what I want to end up doing.

So what do you want to end up doing?

She smiled. I'm not sure. I hope I know it when I see it. She took a drag. You're sure this doesn't bother you? Does watching someone smoke make you want one?

I shrug. "No, it's okay. I've taken a philosophical stance that helps me avoid wanting
