Chapter One

Kristyn slowed down as the car crept up along the winding mountain roads. This is bullshit, she muttered. We should have stayed on the interstate.

The two-lane highway was wet, and the forest on each side of the car was deep black. Relax, Mattie said. She had a blanket with her in the passenger seat, and she'd balled it up and was using it as a pillow. Just go slow. It's the middle of the night anyway. It's not like we're in a big rush.

They were heading south out of the Pacific Northwest, slowly making their way through the mountains toward California. Mattie had been working for the last year in Vancouver doing photo shoots and making adult videos, and there were offers for bigger money in Los Angeles. Now she and her best friend Kristyn were taking a long drive south. They'd gotten off to a late start, not leaving until the afternoon instead of first thing in the morning, so they'd decided to drive through the night. Everything had gone fine until they hit a major delay because of a tractor trailer rollover blocking up the interstate. They opted for a longer route through some smaller mountain towns to keep making time, but now they were slowing down to a crawl on the narrow and dark state highways.

Kristyn rolled her window down a few inches. I don't have enough coffee in me for this shit. Mattie, light me a cigarette.

Mattie sighed and stretched, then dug into Kristyn's purse to find the cigarette pack. After cracking her own window a few inches, she put a cigarette between her lips and fired it up with the disposable light. She took a deep drag and watched out the front window as Kristyn navigated the slick black roads. It was so dark out. She exhaled and passed the cigarette to her friend, placing it between her lips so that Kristyn wouldn't have to take her hand off the wheel.

It's so black, Mattie said, lighting a second one for herself. It's like we're in space.

It's blacker than you, Kristyn quipped, teasing her friend. But if we were in space, there would be stars.

Whatever, bitch, Mattie replied. You wish you were as black as me. Gross, why am I even smoking this? We should have brought pot.

Yeah, right, over the border, good idea, Kristyn laughed. How black are you, anyway? A quarter, right?

Yeah. Is there any booze? She dug into Kristyn's purse.

Check my backpack behind you, Kristyn said. Don't get fucked up or anything, though, she said. I can't drive all night. You'll have to take over at some point.

Mattie pulled a bag up from the backseat and opened in, finding an unopened half-pint
