    I woke up to the sound of the wind roaring. It was totally dark, and the vibrations of the road had turned the cramped back seat of Olivia's Civic into a comfortable little cradle for me to sleep, but the sudden change in air pressure meant Olivia had rolled down the window. I waited, and then I smelled it. Olivia was having a cigarette.

    Why was it so dark? Where was the moon? I shifted around, getting my arm out from under me and pushed myself up into a sitting position. My head felt cloudy, somewhere between still drunk and hung-over, but I didn't feel too bad. I looked out into the blackness and realized why there was no moonlight. It was cloudy outside, too.

    Hey, sleeping beauty, Olivia said, glancing into the rear view mirror. You're awake already?

    For a while, I murmured, and then repeated myself more loudly so Olivia could hear me over the wind. I crawled into the front, resting my butt in the more comfortable seat and pulling on the seat belt. Are we in Montana yet?

    Not even close, Olivia replied, taking a drag on her cigarette and gently blowing the smoke toward the cracked-open window. Most of the smoke was sucked out into the wind, but the smell still circled around to my nose.

    Let me have one of those, I said. Olivia nodded to the pack in the console, and I helped myself. Thanks. I lit the cigarette with her lighter and took a shallow puff. It had been a year since I'd had one, since I broke up with Chuck. That had been a good breakup. I'd shaved my head, done a diet cleanse, quit smoking, and slept with three different girls and two guys in six months.
