I knew her routine, having listened to her pee hundreds of times before but she surprised me – which is why I was still listening so intently when she reappeared. I’d been waiting for the roll of the loo-paper and the wash of hands – but she did neither. Instead, I was sitting on a table with my head cocked as she came back into the corridor.

“No paper,” she complained, before reading the position of my body. She knew what I’d been doing and there was no point denying it. The way I was sitting with my head cocked, I may as well have been caught with a listening-trumpet pressed against the wall of the toilet.
