About this ebook
My Grandma once told me a story of how we prevent growth if we are not grounded and willing to turn inward in demanding situations. She explained this concept with flora and fauna, the environment that surrounded us while planting a Yellowwood tree.
She told me that our growth could be compared to the growth of trees. They go through many seasons, some more pleasant than others, but each time-frame serves a purpose. For example, we must go through winter and shed our leaves. This may be painful and look beyond repair, but this is how we allow ourselves to turn inward to grow. She said that some of us are so scared to go through a winter that we try to uproot ourselves in the hopes of finding more summer. In doing this, you deprive yourself of growing into a tall majestic tree that lasts a lifetime.
Looking back, I can remember the times I felt removed from the cycles of life. I felt overwhelmed by my environment and that any moment the winds of change were going to take me down. Only until I discovered I could create one, much like a tree, where I could turn to my inner strength and ground myself, no matter the demands of the outside world.

Introduction
The Nature of Trees
My Grandmother was an amazing woman and a true storyteller. I only recently realized that she was an incredibly mindful person who taught me the immense value of what’s inside through a story while we were planting a Yellowwood tree together:
Darling, do you see this little tree we are planting has beautiful green leaves? Did you know that it will lose its leaves every year when it is winter, and it will look ugly and almost dead? But in the winter, when it looks meek and dead on the outside, it turns its growth to the inside. When the warmth of spring arrives, it can push out new leaves through inner strength gained in the winter. The same is true for people. We need to go into winters. We need to turn to our inside, no matter how cold and grim the outside may seem. Only by allowing ourselves to turn inward for growth can we push out our new leaves in the spring and ground our roots deeper for windy seasons ahead. Some people are so afraid to go through winter. They would rather uproot themselves, try to move to a spring or summer in another place and not grow where they are planted. The problem with that is that a little tree that is uprooted and that doesn’t go through tough seasons, never grow strong roots or big branches so they can make shade and become tall majestic trees.
See, in today’s society, we are always rushing and uprooting ourselves. Sometimes I think we don’t even know what season we are in. If we really were like trees, I believe tree-people today would always be whining about where they have been planted—always wondering if they will grow as big as the tree next to them. The Yellowwood would be wondering why it doesn’t have pretty blossoms like the Peach Tree. Will I ever feel as tranquil as the Willow?
Why is my bark not as smooth as the Rock Fig Tree?
This sense of never being present where you are planted and not knowing your worth is what’s driving us to be the most overweight, sad, depressed, and lonely society in human history. We are unable to see through the haze of comparison—the winds of rapid change. We have become unsteady and unrooted, and we desperately need to acknowledge that we have to turn inward, get to know our nature, and grow strong beyond the distractions around
