About this ebook

You hold in your hands a piece of a puzzle far grander than you could ever know. For scrawled in blood upon the pages are stories twisted thirty-one in all, soaked in the embers of my insanity. Five minutes to glimpse inside the eyes of someone new, five minutes to ponder, five minutes to sing, five minutes to do almost anything. A peasant, a zombie, a robot, a war. A kiss, a witch, a titan, a roar. Mirrored reflections, a funeral or two. Death and division, humanity askew. A belfry of bats, a sea of black cats, so many moments out there to see, so many things you could see with me. So take a seat beside me and call it voodoo, because now you ride with me too...

    I Did Steal the Keys

David looks at her and smiles, Only heaven will know what happens next, he says. A tear runs down her cheek, and she grips him tightly.

Why couldn’t this have been something that happened sooner, rather than now. All the time wasted, all the things we’ll never get to do together, all the things we’ll never see together. she says, as tears flood her cheeks, as does his.

At least we had today. At least we had this dance, that was worth it all, he says, as he pulls her away, and places a shaking hand on her chin. This is worth a lifetime, he says, and they kiss passionately, as he pulls away, he notices the softness in her face changes to one of stone, then he notices the glistening red blood on her lips. Frantically he drags his sleeve across his mouth several times, until all the blood is gone, then gently wipes it from hers.

I-I-I, I’m so… He doesn’t get to finish his apology as she places a finger to his lips and smiles nervously.

It’s okay, she says softly, Somethings are inevitable, we just forget death happens until it’s upon us with its teeth sunk into our flesh. Does, does it hurt?

Not as much as I thought it would.

C-C-Can’t we try to do something?

We’ve already been over this, there’s nothing anyone can do, not now. If we had a time machine, we could go back and do something earlier, stop all this shit from happening, but now we’re just crossing the line, he says with a muffled laugh, We might as well be asking for a blue genie who can grant infinite wishes.

Her face lights up, and she grips his hands tightly, staring up at him with wild excited eyes, What if we could?

    What if we could what?

What if we could go back in time?

Time travel isn’t possible, you know that as well as I do, so stop being silly.

But what if it wasn’t? What if I could get hold of a time machine and go back and change everything.

He smiles and caresses her shoulders, Then everything would be different, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation, or sharing this moment.

She stands there staring at him lost in a million different thoughts all at once, then her eyes ignite again. Okay, but what if instead of going back and changing everything, I could come back to now and leave things to help, like in Bill & Ted?

What the hell did they do in Bill & Ted?

Stole the keys to the jail, remember?

His smile broadens and he looks off into the nothingness beyond the walls of the room. That’s right, they were the ones who stole the keys, he says with a laugh, then looks back at her. But you know that was just a movie, and this is real life. Things like that don’t happen.

But what if they did? What if it was possible, that sometime in the future before I die, I get hold of a time machine and come back to the here and now, with a way of saving you?

It’s a wonderful thing to dream, he says.

But what if we don’t have to dream it, she says excitedly. What if there is such a thing, and I do get the chance to get in a time machine? What then?

No, I’m not going to play into this disillusion you’re getting yourself all wrapped up in, just let it be. he says as he pushes her away.

She stares at him for a moment, before looking up at the roof. I’ll put it up there, above where we are standing! she says pointing to one of the roof panels. NOW STOP BEING A DICK AND GIVE ME A LIFT UP! she yells, he stares at her and sighs.

"Okay, but once you see that there is nothing up there, will you forget about this stupid
