    Introduction

While it was initially believed that the art of meditation came from India thousands of years ago, the concept was adopted by other neighboring countries and quickly spread  throughout the world. Although it was first a Hindu practice, it soon became adopted by different religions. Records dating back to about 1500 BCE refer to Vendatism, which is a tradition that was practiced as part of the Hindu beliefs. While this is what was recorded, it’s accepted by historians that the practice of meditation actually dates back to around 3000 BCE.

The terminology to meditate was only introduced in the 12th Century AD, and its roots are in the Latin word meditatum.

Other ancient records that refer to meditation come from Taoist China and Buddhist India, although this continues to be debated. Both forms of meditation are closely interlinked, and western and local religions have adopted many of these techniques. Meditation and mindfulness techniques are becoming increasingly popular, and in a survey that was conducted in the United States in 2007, revealed that almost one in ten Americans had meditated at least once. One of the main reasons or benefits of meditation is that it helps with religious rituals and traditions while helping to reduce stress and improve the overall wellbeing of individuals.

While this book is not focusing entirely on meditation, we are going to highlight on Kundalini awakening and the role that it plays in our lives as an energy force. The technique that we are going to use for your Kundalini awakening in this book is through guided meditation.

While there are numerous ways that Kundalini awakening can take place, the most beneficial of these is through guided meditation. This is not a quick fix, though, or an easy path. Many people find that seeking Kundalini Awakening is a process that can be months, years, and even a lifetime of work. There are so many benefits to Kundalini awakening that it is considered one of the most beneficial methods of self-improvement and inviting change into your life that lasts. One of the benefits of Kundalini awakening is that once you begin the process and it starts, there is no way of turning back. It is a permanent state that can be totally overwhelming and terrifying for some. Because the process is so powerful, as the energy forces its way up the spine, whatever has been hiding in the subconscious will be brought to the surface and exposed.

Due to the nature of the process, it is not recommended that this awakening meditation be experienced undertaken on your own. You will need support, guidance, and someone there to help you through this extremely emotional  process. When done correctly, your Kundalini experience can be something that is indescribable. On the other hand, unsupervised, it could be overwhelming and almost traumatic.

Some of the benefits of this awakening have been reported to include the following:

    ●  A better sense of sight, sound, and color

    ●  A decrease in the aging process

    ●  Enhanced levels of creativity

    ●  Greater awareness of the purification process

    ●  Heightened blissful and peaceful feelings

    ●  A higher and greater spiritual connection is felt

    ●  Higher levels of wisdom

    ●  Improved experience of the divine light

    ●  Improved sexual experience

    ●  Increase and improved IQ levels are experienced

    ●  Increased feelings of compassion and empathy towards others

    ●  Elevated levels of inner peace and calm

    ●  Physical attraction is increased

    ●  Physical strength is improved

    ●  Psychic abilities are heightened

    ●  Vibrational energy is increased in the ears in the form of sounds

While going through your process of awakening, you may experience some version of everything listed above or not a single thing. Each individual is unique and to predict how an awakening will affect you is almost impossible.

Chapter 1: The History of Kundalini Awakening Meditation

It’s believed that Kundalini lies dormant within each of us from the time of birth. The word Kundalini is a Sanskrit word, meaning coiled snake. According to the Hindu belief, it is a form of energy that is divine and can be found at the base of the spine. The power associated with the divine feminine or Devi. This can also refer to anything divine, heavenly, or excellent. Two goddesses are revered in the Hindu traditions today closely linked with Kundalini—Parvati, and Durga. Kundalini is found in the Shaktism tradition of Hinduism.

It’s believed that there is a tremendous force of life-changing power that can be released throughout the body and runs along the spine when Kundalini is awakened. It’s said that spiritual, mental, and physical awakening takes place whenever this energy is released through tantric practices. The practice of Kundalini awakening has taken place for many centuries, although the reference or naming of Kundalini awakening can only be traced back to Hatha yoga practices in the 11th century and is therefore not considered new. It's not only a Hindu practice but has since been adopted by other new age religions and forms of modern spirituality.

Awakening Kundalini has almost as many different techniques used, from yoga to pranayama breathing, chanting of specific mantras, and focused awakening through meditation. Kundalini Yoga usually practices this. No matter which practice is used, it is generally described to others as being a feeling of electricity that runs along the spine.

Kundalini is sometimes referred to as the coiled power.

According to Shaiva Tantra, Kundalini is referred to as the innate intelligence of embodied consciousness. It is widely agreed that the best way to awaken kundalini is through a teacher, guru, or through spiritual practices such as meditation. Joseph Campbell, a religious scholar who spends his time comparing various religions, describes Kundalini as a coiled serpent that is not scary or disgusting, but rather subtle. He says that it is in a state of slumber at the center of the first chakra, which can be found at the base of the spine. We will go more into the understanding h of the seven chakras and the role they play  in the following chapter. Campbell states that part of the Kundalini process is to revive this serpent, getting her to lift her head and coax her up the delicate nerve channel of the spine to the so-called thousand-petaled lotus (also called Sahasrara), which is located in the crown chakra at the top of the head. She emerges from the lowest, base chakra point to the highest lotus center and will pass through and awaken each of the five chakras found in-between. With each awakening, the mental, spiritual, and general nature of the practitioner will be deeply changed forever.
