    I’m sure you’ve noticed how some people have fortress-like protection against colds and flu while others succumb to whatever infection is making the rounds. As soon as there is a cold on its way, these fellow humans will be joining in the fun. They miss no cold—all it takes is someone sneezing and they will pick up the pathogens.

    What is the cause of this phenomenon and, most importantly, what can be done to strengthen the immune system? We are, after all, all equally exposed to incessant swarms of viruses, bacteria, and fungi.  

    All our life our body’s immune system bravely defends us against pathogens—like a police force permanently on patrol warding off anything extraneous to our body. As a result, a whole range of defense mechanisms is activated to eliminate harmful viruses, bacteria and fungal pathogens from our body as well as destroy malfunctioning body cells.

    Our immune system consists of a network of highly specialized cells which identify and eradicate germs entering our body. Occurring completely unnoticed by us, these processes only get our attention when the immune system fails.

    Continuously overtaxing our body’s tissues through harmful influences can lead to our immune cells being damaged to such an extent that the immune system can no longer do its job properly and becomes downright paralyzed. Hordes of bacteria and viruses enter our bodies and populate it—and as a consequence we fall ill. An immune deficiency manifests itself when colds and influenzas start to occur multiple times a year. Does this mean that faced with a large enough number of bacteria and viruses, colds are inevitable for some of us? Whereas our fellow human beings always manage to give bacteria the cold shoulder? By no means! All you have to do is hand your immune system the right tools and suitable means for it to successfully fight off viruses and bacteria. There is, for instance, a whole range of simple and effective tricks and therapies which strengthen the body’s defenses and fortify it against unwelcome diseases. The point is not just to be free of disease—the right way of living also leads to an increase in energy and well-being. Because illness involves not just a surplus of ailments but always a deficit as well: a deficit in the zest for life, of drive and energy.
