Self-Discipline Mastery of The Mind - Peter Meadows

Introduction

No matter where you live in the world, it is easy to identify those who have honed their skills of self-discipline.  They seem to stand out from the masses regardless of the circumstances. When you have mastered this skill, you know that others will be able to count on you to get the job done right, in spite of any obstacles you may face.

The US Navy SEALs, one of the world’s most elite fighting forces live by the mantra, Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body. It’s no wonder that people everywhere view them with deep respect. Sadly though, few people can actually say that they have mastered this quality of self-discipline to this extent. While it is highly desired among so many, the number of people who can follow through on a plan in spite of negative circumstances are minimal at best.

Most of us may believe that we are not capable of living up to the kind of commitment that self-discipline requires. However, there is not only a good reason for you to embrace the possibilities for mastering this quality, but there is also a good reason to do so. While it is a desired trait in many, it is not an inherent trait; we are not born with this ability to control our actions. That means it is learned behavior, which by extension, means that the ability to master it is within all of us.

Having self-discipline is not the same is having motivation. When we are motivated to do something, we are eager to tackle the project. We will easily forego eating, socializing, or spending time on our favorite activities when we are motivated. However, when we have to tackle a job that we are not motivated to do, the circumstances are different. We may sincerely want to accomplish the task, but something gets in the way; we are easily distracted, and it seems almost impossible to push through the drudgery.

Why Everybody Needs Self-Discipline

After years of research, the true secret to success has finally been uncovered. Those who are most successful in life are those who have mastered the power of self-discipline. In other words, they are able to push through those kinds of activities that no one else wants to do. When they have a workable goal in front of them, they are willing to do whatever is necessary in order to achieve their desired results.

It doesn’t matter what your goals may be, if you’re not disciplined enough to work through the dull and boring parts of the task, you will not achieve success. This involves ignoring the temptation to watch your favorite TV show, the ability to not answer the phone when you’re deep into a task, or saying no to that dinner invitation when a deadline is on the line

It doesn’t matter who you are, self-discipline is an important quality to have in every aspect of life. When you have it, you have the power to follow through on all of your decisions without sidestepping responsibilities. It allows you to persevere through the thick and thin of any circumstance, and it builds in you an inner strength that you can apply to overcome addictions, avoid procrastination, avoid lazy tendencies, and resist instant gratification. You’ll also learn to:

Control your impulses

Fulfil promises and commitments made to others

Follow through on a project long after the enthusiasm has faded

Stick to your diet or exercise regimen

Get up on time

Or anything else you want to do

Through the pages of this book, you will learn the little secrets that will help you to master success by building up your own self-discipline. Together we will discover:

What self-discipline really is

The fundamental elements of self-discipline

The ways in which having a purpose can lay the groundwork for good self-discipline

How to identify your own weaknesses when it comes to self-discipline

Why it’s important to step out of your comfort zone

How to take control of your environment

And much, much, more

You will understand how to use discipline in your day to day life, and fundamental routines to apply that will steer you in the right direction, no matter what your goals are.

How to Use What You Learn Here in Your Daily Life

To get the most out of the lessons included in this book, it is important that the strategies and tactics listed here serve more than just reading fodder. You need to apply them as soon as possible. When it is recommended that you take action, then do so, whether you understand it fully or not.

You should set a goal right now to succeed in mastering your self-discipline before you turn the page. That will set the precedent for the entire book and get you in the right mindset for success. Don’t hesitate as that will automatically put you into procrastination, which will set you back on your goals even before you get started.

You are not a spectator in your life, so you should make it your goal to be an active participant in the exercises included here. Have fun with it, experiment, and see nothing as an impediment to your goals but rather see them as a stepping stone to your future. Once you’ve achieved that mindset, there will be nothing that can stop you from mastering your own level of self-discipline.

There are plenty of books on this subject on the market, thanks again for choosing this one! Every effort was made to ensure it is full of as much useful information as possible, please enjoy!

Chapter 1: What Really is Self-Discipline

There are many ways to define self-discipline. Most of us understand it to be the ability to regulate one’s actions to accomplish a set goal. Some people may give a simple answer in explaining it. They may say it is self-control, the ability to restrain oneself, or an exercise in willpower.

While all of those answers are correct when describing self-discipline, its true definition goes much deeper than that. When you have self-discipline, you have the ability to push through difficult and challenging things in the hopes of achieving a goal of improving yourself in the end. The skill can be applied to any aspect in your life. Whatever your goal, it is the ability to do whatever it takes to achieve it, no matter what.

All of us have some form of self-discipline but we each may possess it to a different degree. However, we can improve our degree of self-discipline simply by understanding it better. Most people think of it as a matter of willpower, the action of making a decision to follow through on something and seeing it to its end. To a certain extent this is true, however, we are all biological creatures and it helps to understand the science behind what is happening internally when you exercise self-discipline.

The Biology Behind It

All of our behaviors originate in the brain. Scientists have long understood that this organ is made up of 100 billion neurons that work together to produce our thinking and our conduct. While we have learned a lot about how the brain works, there is still a lot of uncovered territory, so you can fully expect that what we have already come to understand will be expanded on in later years.

However, based on research completed to date, we have come to learn a little bit about how the brain processes the thought patterns that surround our self-confidence. Through the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging machines, they have been able to observe brain activity as it happens while people are exercising their self-discipline.

Through these studies, it has been observed that the ventral medial prefrontal cortex experienced an increase in activity when participants were asked to make a choice between accepting a large monetary reward for some time in the future or a smaller reward now. The old age battle of whether or not they could delay their gratification.

A second area of the brain that fired when such decisions were presented is the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. This is the area known to function when trying to decide on future options. When the participant of the study was weighing long-term consequences, there was a much higher degree of activity in this region of the brain.

From these studies, researchers were able to determine that the type of self-discipline needed
