Knitting for Beginners. Learn How to Knit Basic Stitches and Knitting Techniques - Florence Schultz
INTRODUCTION
Knitting is a great way to create beautiful and functional items for yourself, your family, and friends. Knitting has its roots in the boats of fishermen. They used rudimentary knitting techniques to mend their nets. The skill made its way to land in the form of wool sweaters and accessories as protection from harsh winter weather. Today knitting is a popular art form which is enjoyed by men and women of all ages and walks of life.
In this book I will take you step by step and teach you the basics of knitting and knitting techniques. We’ll also learn all about yarn and the different types of needles used in knitting. Next we’ll move onto basic stitches and techniques. Finally I have included some original beginner patterns so you can practice your new skills. Ready? Let’s get to it!
CHAPTER ONE – Yarn and Needles
Yarn Fibers
Today’s yarn is manufactured form three main types of fibers; animal, plant, and synthetic. Animal fibers include wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere, angora, and silk. Plant fibers include cotton, bamboo, soy, hemp, and linen. Synthetic fibers used are acrylic, polyester, micro-fiber, and other synthetic fibers added to yarn to add embellishments, texture, and sheen.
Animal and plant fiber based yarns are usually blocked to bring out the beauty of the stitches and to size the project correctly. Dampen the project and then roll it up gently in a big fluffy towel to remove the excess moisture.
