INTRODUCTION
Embroidery has been used through the ages to embellish and beautify garments, religious vestments, and home décor items. You can find examples of embroidery in almost all cultures through the ages. In this book we will learn the basic stitches used for hand embroidery and I will share some examples of the different types of embroidery styles popular today. I hope this book starts you out on a lifelong love of hand embroidery. I learned to stitch when I was very young at the side of my grandmother and I still enjoy embroidery today. So are you ready to learn a time honored craft? Great, lets begin!
CHAPTER ONE – Thread and Equipment
This chapter will serve as a quick overview to get you acquainted with the different types of embroidery floss and equipment used in hand embroidery. Embroidery thread, known as floss in the US, comes in many different colors and variations. It is also available in several different types of fibers and thicknesses.
Stranded Cotton
Stranded cotton is what most of us are familiar with. In the US this is what we refer to as embroidery floss. It comes in small skeins with six strands of thread. The six strands of thread are each made up of two smaller plies which are twisted
