Crochet for Beginners. Learn How to Crochet Basic Stitches and Techniques Essential for Beginners - Florence Schultz

CHAPTER ONE – Yarn and Hooks

Before you can being to crochet it is important that you know about yarn and hooks. Yarn comes in many different types of fibers, and there are various types of hooks available today. In this chapter we’ll learn about yarn and yarn fibers, how to read a yarn label, and all about crochet hooks.

    Yarn Fibers

Yarn is created using three main types of fibers; animal, plant, and synthetic. The process of manufacturing yarn is pretty much the same with all of the various fibers. The bales or fibers arrive at the manufacturer and are either pre-dyed or dyed on site, the fibers are combed and washed, dried, steamed, and then wound into the familiar balls and skeins you find at your favorite yarn store. Artesian yarn producers sometimes spin their own fibers, dye them, and then wind the yarn into hanks or balls. Yarn comes in several weights, textures, and colors and as you progress in your craft I’m sure you will collect quite the stash.

    Animal Fibers

Animal Fibers used to create yarn include wool from sheep, alpaca from the animal with the same name, mohair from goats, cashmere from the underbelly of a specific breed of goat, and soft angora made from the fur of Angora rabbits. Silk is also considered an animal fiber yarn and is usually used in blends to give yarn strength, sheen, and drape. Yarn made from animal fibers is warm, soft, and squishy. Wool has been a favorite of crocheters for many years for good reason. The fabric is strong and warm, and the yarn is easy to work with. Wool blended with acrylic produces an easy to care for project and is easy to work with. You can find animal fiber yarn in many different colors, weights, and textures.

Animal fiber yarns need to be blocked to retain their shape. Blocking refers to pinning damp crochet pieces to blocking squares or a large towel and letting them dry completely to open up the stitches, relax the fabric, and shape them correctly. The easiest blocking method is to dampen your project and then roll it up in a big fluffy towel to remove the excess moisture. Place the piece on blocking mats and lightly shape it with your hands. Begin at an edge and pin the piece all around the edges to shape it. Let dry completely before you remove it. Your piece
