Learn to Crochet in One Day. Learn To Crochet In Just One Day And Create Quick And Easy Crochet Projects - Florence Schultz

    Introduction

Crochet is an art form and an enjoyable and productive hobby. Crochet artists from around the world enjoy sharing and discovering new patterns. You can learn how to crochet in just one day and begin working easy and quick projects. In this book we will learn the basics of yarn and hooks, basic and a few intermediate crochet stitches, and the crochet techniques you need to learn to begin your lifelong journey with crochet.

There are several theories about the origin of crochet. Annie Potter, an American crochet expert wrote The modern art of true crochet as we know it today was developed during the 16th century. She goes on to report crochet became known as ‘crochet lace’ in France and ‘chain lace’ in England. She also sites that in 1916 Walter Edmund Roth found examples of true crochet when he visited the Guiana Indians.

Lis Paludan of Denmark, who researched the origins of crochet in Europe, reported that the craft originated in Arabia and later spread along the trade routes to Tibet, Spain, and other Mediterranean countries. She also speculates crochet may have begun in a primitive tribe in South America, or may have begun in China.

Examples of crochet in Europe have been found as far back as the 1500’s when it was known as ‘nun’s work’ or ‘nun’s lace’. The crochet we know today was very popular in the 1800’s in Europe. The beautiful and intricate art of Irish crochet saved many families from starvation during the potato famine in the mid-19th Century.  No matter when or how crochet came into the world, today it is one of the most popular yarn arts and is gaining popularity with all age groups.

With this book you will join the ranks of crochet artists down through the centuries and learn a craft which gives you a chance to not only express your creativity, but create beautiful projects for yourself, friends, and family.

Chapter One – Yarn and Hooks

In this chapter we’ll learn all about yarn and hooks. Choosing the correct yarn and hook for your project is essential, and in this chapter we’ll learn just what you need to know to do this.

    Yarn Fibers

Yarn is manufactured from three main types of fibers; animal, plant, and synthetic. Animal fibers include wool, alpaca, mohair, cashmere, and silk. Plant fibers include cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo, and soy. Synthetic yarn is produced from acrylic, polyesters, micro-fiber, and metallic threads. Each type of yarn offers benefits and a different type of stitch definition and drape.

Animal and plant yarns look best if they are blocked after you finish your project. Blocking stretches the yarn fibers and opens up the stitches. Wet the fabric and then roll it up in a large fluffy towel to remove most of the moisture. Do not ring the crocheted fabric or you will damage the stitches. Lay the fabric out on blocking pads or another large towel and pin the edges gently stretching the project into shape. Let it dry completely before you remove it.

You can also use a spray bottle for smaller projects. Pin the project out first and then lightly mist it and let dry.

    Yarn Weights and Texture

Yarn comes in many different weights and textures. Yarn can range from very fine to very thick and
