Crochet for Beginners Learn how to Crochet - Amy Lehman

    Crochet Hooks

Let's start with the basics of crocheting! You will need crochet hooks and yarn. I will go over different types of yarn and crochet hooks.

Video to Watch: How to Crochet for Beginners.

    How to hold crochet hooks?

    Pencil or knife grip?

I've seen some people hold their hook both ways. I was taught the proper way to hold a crochet hook was like a pencil, but it is what feels most comfortable to you.

When my fingers get tired and I am crocheting with thicker yarn then I will hold the hook with a knife grip.

    Pencil Grip

You can hold your hook like a pencil when you crochet. I was taught this way when I learned to crochet. It depends on what feels most comfortable to you when you crochet.

    Knife Grip

The knife grip is how you hold a knife when you eat or holding a hook overhand. This type of grip gives you nice control over your hook when you crochet. I usually use this type of grip when I crochet with thick yarn.

    Recommended Crochet Hooks

I recommend Susan Bates crochet hooks. There are so many hooks to choose from.

There are plastic, wooden, metal, clay, etc. Susan Bates hooks have an inline throat. This means that the shaft and the head of the hook are like a cylinder with a small notch for the yarn. I think the Susan Bates hooks grip the yarn the best and many crocheters love them!
