THE NAMES of the two main stitches used for knitting in Portuguese are liga and meia (purl and knit) – and they come from the garments that bear the same names. , literally meaning ‘tie’, comes from the ties or garters used to hold up socks, and means socks or stockings, which for centuries were the most common knitted garments.
