      Preface

My earliest memories of knitting have the flavor of childhood. Sitting on my grandmother's lap, I watched one stitch after another slide across her needles. Magic before my eyes: simple balls of yarn transformed into big scarves, delicate cardigans, warm afghans, and magnificent and timeless shawls.

Several years later, my mother gave me my first balls of yarn and lent an ear to all my questions.

All of this was what inspired me to create Breaking the Wool, whose ambition is to make this ancestral practice, which many unfairly judge to be old-fashioned and boring, more modern and accessible.

I want to encourage you to use your needles always and everywhere; may the creations in this book inspire you! I also hope—why not?—to kindle a few vocations.
