    INTRODUCING THE AUTHOR Wolfgang Matejek

    Wolfgang Matejek (called Wolf by his friends and clients) is a successful business consultant, trainer and public speaker. As a business coach and trainer he works with companies world-wide, aiding in the re-structuring of their employee skills and development.

    Before becoming a business coach and trainer, he had a colourful career in general business management. Having worked in exciting places such as a 5* hotel in Bermuda, running his own restaurant/bar in Germany and also having worked at the world-famous South Bank Arts Centre in London, he played with the idea of a career change.

    In 1992, he lost his job as an IT Manager through redundancy. He found himself at cross-roads in his life. This sudden change left him wondering of what to do next. About the same time, a close friend of his fell very ill and suffered severe depression. And he wanted to help... but didn’t know how. So the idea of helping others was born. He started reading up on subjects such as complementary therapy, aromatherapy, counselling and others.

    Over the next few years he attended a variety of courses to gain a stronger insight into therapy services and also attained various qualifications to set prepare himself for the new adventure as a part time therapist.

    In 1994 he qualified as an Aromatherapist. From there he progressed with further studies covering subjects such as counselling, stress management and relaxation therapy. Between his studies he also worked as a freelance business consultant, specialising in the provision of training services as a bespoke systems applications trainer.

    In 2002, he qualified as a Stress Management Consultant (MASC). He utilises a series of consultations incorporating aspects of stress analysis, relaxation techniques and comprehensive reviews of company productivity channels and coaching of employees and management to perform better in their respective roles. In summer 2006 he finished his qualification as a Hypnotherapist (DHP).

    Since then he has been working as an international training consultant, specialising in the employee skills re-distribution and development, running workshops and courses in countries around the world.

    Now it is your turn to change your own and maybe even other people’s lives by learning new stress management skills to enjoy a more rewarding, happier and better life.

    To be able to see how you can help yourself or involve a practitioner, you will need to know the basics about stress also.

    So let’s begin with your journey. 

    3. Understanding Stress

    Well, no matter how it is put, you have to recognise that there is no universally accepted definition of stress and knowledge of the key definitions that are currently in use. It includes understanding that the stress concept and stress management practice includes issues relating to both causes and effects of stress.

    4. Definitions of Stress

    Stress arises when individuals perceive that they cannot adequately cope with the demands being made on them or with threats to their well-being.

    Stress, it is argued, can only be sensibly defined as a perceptual phenomenon arising from a comparison between the demand on the person and his or her ability to cope. An imbalance in this mechanism, when coping is important, gives rise to the experience of stress, and to the stress response.

    Stress is the psychological, physiological and behavioural response by an individual when they perceive a lack of equilibrium between the demands placed upon them and their ability to meet those demands, which, over a period of time, leads to ill-health.
