Introduction
Can Penguins and Humans Fly?
They both discover their wings
under life-threatening circumstances
Emperor penguins can fly. Just for a few seconds. They shoot up from the water about four or five feet in the air to land on the ice at a higher level, when threatened by a predatory leopard seal lurking under the ice.¹ Humans can fly beyond the limitations of their day-to-day lives, under life-threatening circumstances. We have heard stories of how ordinary people occasionally display extraordinary feats of strength. For example, a mother lifting a very heavy fallen beam to free her child trapped under it.
The seers of Mexico, such as don Juan Matus, explained such happenings as a part of ‘non-ordinary reality’. A good example is how any little child can intuitively find and play games on a smartphone long before they learn to read. Why do they lose such abilities when they grow up? As an engineer, I wanted to find a practical framework for doing things that go beyond the ‘ordinary reality’ of our lives. I was inspired by what Carlos Castaneda had written: If you enter a state of ‘non-ordinary reality’, it is only to draw from it what you need to see the miraculous character of ordinary reality.²
While searching for practical ways to unravel the mysteries of ‘non-ordinary reality’, I found bits and pieces from diverse sources while living and working in Europe, USA and Sri Lanka. Many of the books I read emphasised the power of positive thought. However, they didn’t explain how I could get rid of the negative thoughts lurking in my mind. Motivational programs and speakers were able to energise and empower me. But, most of it was gone within a few days.
In contrast, I observed that every pre-school child was able to learn complex things like walking and talking, without help from anyone. I wanted to find out how they did that. What I found from diverse sources were like the pieces of a colourful but incomplete jigsaw puzzle. Fitting them all together into a complete, concise and actionable model was the challenge I faced when writing this book. My aim was to give ‘need to have’ information, with a minimum of ‘nice to have’ background information.
I wanted to develop a simple but complete instruction manual on how anyone can unleash their vast inborn human potential to achieve extraordinary feats, as highly successful people have done. This book contains a blend of concepts and methodologies drawn from diverse sources such as Oriental martial arts, Tibetan rites and Himalayan wisdom, combined with the latest research in neuroscience, genetics, behavioural psychology, nutrition, healthcare etc.
To support the validity of all the concepts I present, I have given a list of references at the end of the book, and links to online content as footnotes at the bottom of each page (mostly as shortened links, made through the kind courtesy of http://tinyurl.com). However, since this information was collected over four decades, I may have failed to acknowledge some sources. My sincere
