    And Jesus said to them, I am the Bread of Life. He who comes to Me will never be hungry, and he who believes in and cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me will never thirst any more (at any time). (John 6:35)

    This book is

    dedicated to:

    The two women who made me pray—my mother, Thomasine David,

    and my grandmother, Edna Branford;

    My mother-in-law, Joan Rose, who helped and encouraged me to pray;

    My daughters, Jodeth and Dustin, who first gave me a reason to pray;

    And finally,

    To Garie, Anthony, David, Dominic, and Jonah, who made

    me believe in the power of prayer.

    INTRODUCTION

    Prayer is talking to God with love; I learned this as a child in catechism class. Prayer does not need to be scripted, said on our knees, or take place in a particular location. God understands all languages, dialects, and accents. Yes, He even understands slang.

    This is a collection of my conversations with God or with myself. I wrote some when I was hurt, some when I was desperate, some when I was scared, some when I was frustrated, some when I was joyful, and some when I was thankful. I believe in the power of prayer, especially prayers based on the Word of God. Many prayers in this collection are knitted with scriptures—it is my way of challenging God and taking Him at His Word.

    I started writing my prayers in 2007. Depending on where I am, I still write prayers on pieces of paper and on my phone. Some prayers in this collection I wrote and never looked at again until I began working on this book. I am saddened by this because I could have found so much strength and inspiration from my own written words. It is my prayer that you will be able to relate to and find comfort in my expressions. This book is not only a labor of love but of encouragement and a reaffirmation of my faith in God.

    Prayer changes things; it can actually shift the atmosphere. James 5:16 says, "The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]." Hannah prayed fervently, so much, that she was accused of being drunk. Jehoshaphat prayed, David prayed, Jabez prayed, Hezekiah prayed, Daniel prayed, Mordecai prayed, and the prophets prayed. I encourage you to read their stories.

    If you are new to a life of prayer, welcome. I hope this book will be a good resource for you. Remember however, the most effective prayers come from the heart. So open yours to Him today and believe that He still answers prayers.

    As a woman, parent, daughter, friend, and wife, I am sure many of my experiences, wants, and needs are similar to yours. Let our faith in God and in the power of prayer be our divine connection.

    Pray until something happens, then keep right on praying in thanksgiving and for those who are unable to pray for themselves.
