    CHAPTER 1

Mary Regal invited Echo and Kiandra inside her Malibu mansion. She led them to a spacious living room with genteel furnishings and a trio of chandeliers high above their heads. A romantic spiral staircase with a white-pine baluster, embellished with a seemingly faraway background.

Echo’s eyes roamed from the 18-foot embossed ceiling to the long sofa that strangely had slight humps between each plush seat cushion. When Mary closed the door, Echo said, Two months ago, I bought a nice home for $950,000. Your place makes me feel like I bought an apartment in the projects.

Aw, I’m sure you got yourself a lovely home; have a seat, please. Mary was a 61-year-old-black woman who could easily pass for 40-something. She wore a well-designed chiffon dress that dropped just below her knees, displaying gorgeous legs and healthy calves.

Echo and Kiandra sat a hump apart on the long sofa. Kiandra thought the woman looked good for her age and believed Mary was once a beautiful showstopper many years ago. The woman’s breasts were too damn big, though, and Kiandra wondered how much the double D’s would sag without the bra. She imagined big, wrinkly prunes, even though Mary’s face, arms, hands, and legs suggested otherwise. Echo glanced at the iPad in Kiandra’s hands then said to Mary, The head of UCASTU asked Godsend to take your case as a favor to her. Normally, a case like yours would have been bypassed.

    Yes ma’am, we are.

And you think I can’t afford the other $45,000?

I don’t recall saying that to you. He locked eyes with her.

Well, I don’t understand why you’re saying the case is a favor to Angel if I’m paying for your services.

He smiled at her and displayed teeth for only a second. Maybe Angel didn’t tell you, but Godsend normally takes cases concerning children, women, and elderly people.

You’re an investigator, and I’m told that you guys are the best, so I’m sure you know that I’m 61 years old. I’m also a woman, I can assure you."

He smiled again. I’ll bet my damn house you’re a woman. You look 45, 48, but I know you’re 61, ma’am. I’m saying the victim involved in the case has to meet one of the criteria. Your husband was killed 15 years ago, and he was only 47 at the time.

Kiandra said, "None of that matters, ma’am. We’re taking your husband’s case. The rule was bent as a favor to Angel because her organization has brought us a lot of
