PREVIOUSLY in LOVING A DALLAS STREET LEGEND…

"I need to see Dalyia," Nitro said.

Let me get Nate, Kaleb answered.

Nate, Kaleb called, it’s time to go.

Aww, Nate whined from across the lawn but said his goodbyes and walked over to Kaleb and Nitro.

We’ve been gone for a while, Kaleb told Nate. If we stay gone too long your mom and Auntie B might not want to let us go to the park again.

Nitro couldn’t believe Brite was in on keeping his son from him right along with Dalyia. She was in his home. He had seen her a few days ago. He’d asked her how Dalyia was doing. She had plenty of chances to come clean with him. If for nothing else for a little boy who needed to know his father.

Okay, Nate agreed to leave the park. But can we get ice cream before we go? Nate was referring to the ice cream truck stationed on the other side of the park.

For sure, Kaleb said. Why don’t you two walk over to the truck and pick out what you want. I’m going to go to the car to get some money.

Okay, Nate said. He grabbed Nitro’s hand. Come on.

Nitro wasn’t sure if Kaleb needed any money or not but he was grateful for the few minutes to spend with his son alone. Once they reached the truck, Nitro looked back and saw Kaleb sitting in his car. He had indeed been giving Nitro a few minutes with Nate. Nitro tilted his head towards Kaleb to thank him.

So what kind do you want? Nitro asked Nate.

    Nivella, Nate said.

It brought a smile to Nitro’s face. He knew he was trying to say vanilla.

Two scoops or one? Nitro asked.

Really? Nate sounded excited. Mommy only lets me get one scoop.

Well, today you get two scoops, Nitro told him.

    Yay, Nate squealed.

Nitro handed Nate the two scoops on a cone. He wished he could have gotten a picture of Nate’s eyes as he handed him the cone. They grew to the size of giant marbles. Watching his son, he felt deprived. His son had been deprived. And for what?

Nitro couldn’t think straight. He kept playing over in his head the day he’d gone to Dalyia’s house. The words her mother had said. The words were harsh. She’d made Nitro feel like shit. Like he was less than a man. All those words, she said Dalyia had told her.

Look Kaleb, Nate said as they reached the car. I got two scoops.

You got big boy scoops little homey, Kaleb replied.

Yeah, big boy scoops, Nate repeated.

You ready to go home? Nitro asked.

Yes, Nate said as Nitro helped him into his booster seat.

Let’s go see your mommy, Nitro told him.

    Okay, Nate added.

I’ll follow you, Nitro told Kaleb.

It was a quick drive back to Dalyia’s place. Nitro wasn’t sure how he would approach Dalyia. He just wanted one question answered; why?

Kaleb pulled into the driveway. Nitro parked on the street. Once Nitro put the car in park, he looked over and saw Brite sitting on the porch. When she saw Nitro drive up just after Kaleb pulled into the driveway, she stood up.

Nitro couldn’t read the expression on her face. It wasn’t an expression of shock. It was more an expression of sadness. He expected her to retreat into the house to warn Dalyia he was there. But she didn’t. Nitro got out of his car and walked over to Kaleb’s car.

Brite walked towards Kaleb’s car as well. When she got within a few steps of the car, they could tell she had been crying.

Kaleb, can you please take me home? Brite asked softly.

    Are you alright? Nitro asked.

Dalyia needs you, was all Brite said. I’m taking Nate with us. The front door is unlocked.

Nitro watched as Kaleb backed out of the driveway with Brite and his son. He walked to the door. With each step his heartbeat increased. He hadn’t been inside Dalyia’s mother’s house in almost four years. He couldn’t explain his anxiety level. He wondered what Brite could have meant when she said, ‘Dalyia needs you.’

Nitro opened the door without knocking and walked inside the house. He looked around. The walls were the same color they were four years ago. The furniture had been replaced. He heard a noise coming from the hallway. He walked towards it. As he walked farther down the hallway, the sound increased. Just outside the door that was once Dalyia’s room, he knew it was Dalyia inside crying.

    Nitro opened the door.

Brite, I told you to get the hell out of my house, Dalyia yelled.

    It’s not Brite, Nitro spoke.

The Truth Doesn't Cost Anything, But a Lie Could Cost You Everything

Dalyia could never forget that voice. She slowly turned around to face Nitro. For so long she had wanted him to walk through her door. Her chest was still heaving up and down as she fought to control her emotions. She was losing the battle. The realization hit her like a ton of bricks. Nitro hadn’t walked away from her. He was snatched away by her own selfish, controlling mother.

As angry as Nitro was at Dalyia right then, he couldn’t stand there and let her cry. He wondered what happened to put her in this state of mind and what happened between her and Brite that made her put Brite out of her house. He wondered if they fought because Kaleb outed their secret.

Nitro’s instinct to protect her kicked in immediately, overriding his need to know why she’d done the unthinkable. He had every intention of confronting her about keeping his son from him. It just wasn’t the first thing that needed to be addressed at the moment.

Nitro walked over to her, reached down and pulled her into an embrace. He inhaled her scent. Closing his eyes, he reminisced. Holding her in his arms as she cried was like deja vu. Almost in the exact same spot he’d told her everything was going to be fine when she told him she was pregnant. Those words wouldn’t easily fall out of his mind this time. He knew in his heart that everything was not going to be alright.

Nitro sat down on the bed and pulled Dalyia onto his lap. Dalyia buried her head into his chest. She cried harder than she had when she thought he’d wanted her to have an abortion. Nitro rubbed her back and tried to comfort her as best he could. He had so many emotions running through his body. His body was reacting to being so close to her. Emotions he thought long ago had died were alive and simmering to break free.

Dalyia, Nitro called her name softly. What’s wrong?

Dalyia tried to speak through her tears and ragged breathing. Her words couldn’t be understood.

Calm down, Nitro whispered. It took several minutes. Slowly her cries started to subside.

    I didn’t know, Dalyia whimpered.

    Didn’t know what? Nitro asked.

My mom. She lied to me. She lied to you. She lied to us, Dalyia mumbled. Brite just told me. Brite has known for almost two years and she didn’t tell me.

What has Brite known? Nitro asked. He was having a hard time following what Dalyia was trying to say?

My mom told me you wanted me to have an abortion, Dalyia finally manage to say.

What? Nitro stood to his feet, almost causing Dalyia to hit the floor.

The night you came over, she said you gave her money to give to me to have an abortion. She lied, didn’t she?

Nitro paced the floor. His body temperature rose up past a hundred degrees. He knew Dalyia’s mom hated him. He just didn’t know it was to the extent she’d encourage her daughter to abort his child.

How can you ask me that? Nitro looked at her. How could you ever believe I would want to kill my own seed? You know how happy I was to be having a son. Didn’t you know that Dalyia?

Dalyia’s tears started streaming down her face as if running a race. She showed me the money. She sounded like she was telling the truth. I told her she was lying.

She sounded like she was telling the truth, Nitro repeated. Are you serious Dalyia? Nitro yelled. You let her turn our world upside down. And for what? Because I was doing what a man was supposed to do. I was making a way for you, for our son, for us.

    I’m sorry, Dalyia babbled.

God dammit, Nitro yelled. You said you loved me Dal. You said you trusted me to provide for us. I was working my ass off to do that. And one lie by your mother and you just said to hell with Nitro.

No, Dalyia said, not really having anything to back up what she was saying.

You didn’t think to ask me. Me, Dalyia. Nitro banged on his chest.

The conversation was intense. Dalyia felt like the entire situation was her fault even though it was her mother who had set things in motion.

I looked into the eyes of my son today. Nitro had to pause to gain his composure. His own tears were threatening to make their presence known. And he had no clue who I was. Do you know how much that hurts? It’s like being stabbed in the chest with the knife being twisted all over again.

What do you mean all over again? Dalyia asked.

Nitro shook his head as he thought about the lies her mother told.

I did come over, Nitro mumbled. I came over to see you. Your mother, she told me you miscarried. She told me you didn’t want to see me. She said you were going off to college just like you always wanted.

Nitro could no longer hold in his emotions. He fell to his knees and let out the cries of a wounded man. Dalyia was quick to go over to Nitro. He wrapped his arms around her waist and cried. Placing his mouth on her stomach, he muffled
