About this ebook

In the thirteenth book of the Godsend Series, there's a valuable lesson to be learned: If you can't stand the heat ... stay your ass away from the Mojave Desert. At 118 degrees, the human body dehydrates quickly. Then comes the dizziness. Then Echo passes out. Kira Sutton should have never told him about the mixed martial arts fighter who stalked and sexually-harassed her. Echo's attempt to punish the MMA fighter has backfired. He's never needed Kiandra more.
Brian and Needles, meanwhile, are investigating a suspicious suicide in Michigan. After confronting the right suspect in an auto body repair shop, a little torture gets the case mostly solved.

    CHAPTER 1

The Mojave Desert was being baked at a temperature of 113o shortly before 10:30 a.m. This was not James Hillsinger’s problem. Yet. He was in an air-conditioned 4-wheel-drive SUV. The cargo area. His wrists and ankles were in handcuffs and shackles, and he imagined his death would be a slow one.

Echo drove with no clear idea of where he wanted to stop the vehicle. Ahead of him was an unforgiving landscape populated with sunburnt wild flowers and heat-absorbing cacti. The mountainous background reminded him of the fake sceneries in some of his favorite Western movies. It occurred to him that those sceneries were probably real.

James said, I won the bet fair and square, so why would you go back on your word?

Echo said, When did I go back on my word? I said I would let you live, and that’s what I’m gonna do.

If I’m in the middle of the fucking desert in handcuffs and shackles, that’s the same as killing me. He was a nice-looking white guy, age 23, and very good at mixed martial arts. He’d harassed and groped Kira Sutton, a beautiful white woman who lived at the Swing Set Palace with Echo and three other women.

Echo said, Since you think it’s the same thing, you want me to shoot you and throw your ass out right now?

No. He’d met Kira after a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game two days ago. She’d turned him down cold in the parking lot, but he followed her. Stalked her. And tried again when she picked up a take-out order from an Italian restaurant in L.A. Kira was afraid, so she allowed the creep to feel her up while he delivered his corny pickup lines. She gave him a fake name and cell phone number but memorized his license plate. James had two surprise guests at his house the next day.

Echo said, I’ll keep the handcuffs; you can keep the shackles. He glanced at the map on his navigation screen. We’re almost at Death Valley, but this seems like a good spot right here. You’re about 36 miles from the nearest anything. I hear it’s supposed to get up to 118o today, so you better walk fast.

"And just how am I supposed to do that with these shackles on? Plus, it feels like you and that other guy broke my back with all those kicks and throwing
