    Self Control - ALLAN DAVIDSON

    Introduction

I want to thank you and congratulate you for downloading the book, Self-control: How to Use Amazing Willpower to Conquer your Important Goals and Achieve Great Results.

A Challenge We are All Familiar with in Our Lives:

Self-control is an area that every human has experienced challenges in, no matter who they are. They start out with the best of intentions; to learn an instrument, to become better at their jobs, to join the gym and stick with the membership, and then are left wondering what made them stop. It seems that this happens time after time, no matter how strongly the person wants their goal. A lot of what this comes down to is a lack of knowledge about the nature of willpower. What is it that makes us keep choosing those self-defeating options over the healthier, smarter ones? What is it that makes us procrastinate, day after day, on tasks that we know are important?

It’s a Matter of the Choices we Make, Each and Every Day:

It turns out, a lot of this behavior has to do with mental habits that we have created and developed without even realizing it. Much of our choices on a daily basis are simply the result of repetition, and habits that foster opposite behaviors can be made just as simply, with the right guidance and knowledge. Understanding ourselves, the conditioning that got us to where we are, and the concrete, actionable steps that can change our path is crucial to breaking this cycle and reaching our highest potential as individuals. This guide is a great place to start on your journey to becoming your best self!

Thanks again for downloading this book, I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter 1: Living in an I Want it Now Society

Our modern culture is structured around convenience. If you want a meal, there’s someone to deliver it to you. If you need to get somewhere, just hop in a car, since it’s quicker than walking. We are constantly searching for the shortcut, or the quickest way to get results. We are trained and conditioned to avoid any discomfort (however mild) and, instead, seek whatever is simple and easy. We are surrounded by programs and commercials that promise instant results, with little to no effort, and we often fall for this line of reasoning time and time again.

Quick Fixes, and the Negative Results over the Long Term:

When we have a headache, we take an aspirin for it instead of stopping to wonder what in our lives might have been causing the pain in the first place. Even though we could benefit our future selves by looking deeper into the causes for such things, we favor the easy way out and, as a result, our integrity suffers. We fail to build character and develop our willpower by thinking about the bigger picture of our lives and choices, and it comes back to bite us all too often. We are left wondering why we cannot seem to keep our commitments to ourselves, and it causes a self-fulfilling prophecy where it just continues to happen and we grow to expect it. This is because we focus more on instant gratification than anything else, in many situations.

    What is Instant Gratification?

Instant gratification is the satisfaction we get when we put aside concerns for the future in favor of whatever will be the most pleasurable choice now. This can be anything from choosing to keep drinking, knowing we’ll suffer a hangover the next day, to not studying for the test we know we have to take tomorrow in favor of going out with friends. Having a goal of instant gratification is destructive in multiple ways:

Failing to Take Consequences into Account: When we are operating under the mindset of attaining instant gratification, we don’t bother to stop and consider the consequences of our choices. It’s so easy to rationalize the choice that seems more enjoyable or pleasurable in the moment, because it sounds better than taking a harder road, even if that road will pay off in the long run.

Making Choices without Thinking them Through: Another downfall of opting for instant gratification time and time again is the fact that we aren’t stopping long enough to consider the choice. If we were just to simply stop and think a few
