An excerpt from Jungle Heat:

Dark-skinned warriors stepped out of the bushes all around us with their spears lowered toward us. All of them were women, dressed in animal skins and with bright feathers woven through their hair, and each of them was more beautiful than the last. Their dark hair was knotted and tied in a dizzying array of warrior knots, each style unique to the woman who bore it. But despite their gorgeous appearances, they all wore expressions of fierce determination.

Amazons… I rose slowly, my hands held high and empty. I thought about reaching for my spear, but I knew it would be fruitless. There were too many of them, and they were prepared for any motion I might make. The Amazons were a secretive tribe of warrior women hardly ever seen by man, and though I’d dreamed of conquering them, I’d believed them to be only a legend until now.

One of the women said something to the others in a language I did not understand, and they all broke into laughter. Then they raised their spears.

A woman with many fine golden earrings on her left ear stepped forward and smiling. I am Nafira. You travelers are lucky, she said in the language of my people, her words broken yet still understandable. She pointed at one of the spear-maidens, perhaps the most beautiful of the group, who wore a golden chain with a great ruby affixed around her neck. Our queen seeks a mate, and wishes to have you.

Me? asked Modan.

Nafira nodded. You… She swung her gaze to me. …and her. Her face broke into a wide smile. Her appetites are large, and she’ll have you at the same time.

I cursed again, louder this time. We do not have time for this. We are on a desperate mission, and demand that you allow us to go.

The spears lowered, hedging us in with a circle of pointy bronze, and Nafira frowned. Then I suggest you make love to her quickly. If you do well, you may ask a boon of her and leave with your lives.

I glanced at Modan and shrugged. His eyes widened. Kitzi? You’re not really…

Come, Modan, I said. The Amazon queen was already stripping down, and I began to do the same. It will be faster to appease them than to argue. If you require some assistance, I can provide it.
