    1. Garcinia cambogia extract

    Garcinia cambogia became world-famous after appearing on Dr. Oz's show in 2012.

    It is a small, green fruit, resembling a pumpkin.

    The bark contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA). This is the active ingredient in extract, which is sold as a diet pill.

    How It Works: Animal studies show that HCA can inhibit a fat-building enzyme in the body and increase serotonin levels, potentially helping to reduce compulsions.

    Effectiveness: A study of 130 people compared garcinia against a placebo. There was no difference in weight or percentage of fat between the groups.

    A review of 2011 observed 12 studies on Garcinia cambogia and found that, on average, it caused a mean weight loss of 0.9kg over several weeks.

    Side effects: There are no reports of serious side effects, but some people report mild digestive problems.
