    Chapter One

Ruby-Rae stirred a moment. From time to time she couldn’t remember where she was. Also at times she would panic thinking Henry would find her and finish the job. She felt a warm hand against her forehead.

‘It’s okay,’ the voice said. ‘It’s okay. Just try to rest.’

She couldn’t see clearly through the swelling of her eyes, but she knew it wasn’t Henry, nor was it Jacob. The voice didn’t belong to her father either.  Ruby-Rae tried to open her mouth, but nothing came out.

‘Don’t try to speak,’ he said. ‘Just rest my darling.’

Her mind raced. Who was this man telling her to rest? Why was he there? Was this man about to kill her too? With that thought she began to struggle even though the man tried to calm her down. The struggle set off the alarm and hospital staff rushed in to calm her down. She was finally given a sedative that made her drowsy.

‘What happened?’ the doctor asked the man.

‘I’m not sure. She just began to panic. I think she’s afraid for her life.’

‘Understandable. The man who brought her in saved her life.’

‘Yes, I know.’ He gazed back at Ruby-Rae. ‘She’s okay now.’

    The doctor nodded.

‘Please make sure no one knows about my visit,’ he said.

    ‘Of course, sir.’

‘Great. Now if you just give me a few more minutes with her and then I’ll be on my way.’

    ‘Certainly.’ The doctor left him.

The man moved extra close to the bed and looked down at the sleeping woman. His heart picked up pace. He didn’t know how to feel. It had been a while and yet it felt like yesterday. He placed his right hand gently on her forehead. He pushed the strands of hair away from her face. She was warm to the touch and it made him feel warm towards her. He leaned forward and whispered into her ear.

‘I’m so sorry this happened to you.’ He sucked in a deep breath. He continued to rub her forehead then leaned forward and gave her a soft kiss.

The man stood up and pulled onto the suit jacket. He wanted to stay, but he knew he couldn’t. It wouldn’t be safe to do so. He took one last look at Ruby-Rae, then left like a thief in the night. No one would ever know he’d been there.

‘What the fuck do you want?’ Henry breathed in pain.

Jacob sat back and just looked at the man who had hurt Ruby-Rae. The man didn’t seem to care that he’d beaten a woman. It felt as though he felt justified.

‘You’re one hell of a man,’ said Jacob softly. ‘Well not really a man. A man doesn’t beat a woman.’

‘Is this what...’ The pain in his knee was excruciating. ‘This is all about.’

    ‘You hurt Ruby-Rae.’

‘You have no idea who we are do you.’ He wiped away the beads of sweat from his forehead.

‘I know who you are, I know who Ruby’s dad is. I don’t really give a shit.’ He smiled. He stood up and poured himself some of the whisky that was on the tray in the corner of the room. ‘Fancy some. It might help with the pain.’

‘What do you want?’ Henry became more agitated.

There was the sound of the drink trickling into the glass. Jacob took the opportunity to savour the whisky. He didn’t seem in a hurry to do anything right then and there. He wanted to make sure Henry felt the pain of the gunshot wound, and by the looks of it seemed to be taking its toil on him.

‘Please. Tell me what you want.’

Jacob moved back to the chair opposite Henry and smiled. ‘I don’t want anything.’

Henry wasn’t sure he liked that answer. It could mean anything. Just then there was a knock at the door.

‘Ah, just on time.’ Jacob made a point to look at his watch. He stood up and went to answer the front door.

‘Mark! Come on in.’ He sounded cheerful.

Mark, the middle aged bald man with a beer belly walked in dragging a travel suitcase behind him. He followed Jacob into the living-room where Henry was losing a lot of blood and looking weaker by the moment.

‘What’s...going on?’ Henry asked out of breath.

‘Stitch him up. I don’t want him dying yet. I want him to feel the pain for his crimes,’ Jacob said to Mark.

‘Sure. Whatever you want boss.’ He headed towards Henry who was looking terrified.

‘Please don’t do this. I have money. Lots of it. I’ll pay you double what he’s giving you.’

    Jacob laughed.

    ‘Please.’

Mark opened the suitcase and brought out some things to mend Henry. Each
