About this ebook

Two men, one woman. One a hybrid vampire werewolf, the other a vampire. One good, one evil, but they both have one thing in common. Their love for the same woman, or so it seems.  Over the centuries they’ve fought, and each time they’ve lost. But this time things are different. If they lose her this time, she’s never coming back. But how can Umi fall in love with men she doesn’t remember, and when she doesn’t know who she is?

Every time it draws close to Umi’s twenty third birthday there is a threat of a spell being broken over her life. If this happens, and she finds out who she truly is, her true nature is revealed.

Too many people don’t want this to happen and this causes Umi to fight for her own life.

Excerpt

He did it again and this time a drop of blood trickled down her neck. He licked it slowly and shut his eyes a moment as he tamed the beast within.

‘Is everything alright?’ she asked.

‘Everything is perfect.’ He looked at her with eyes that had changed. The veins showed through his skin. ‘I’m perfect.’

His cold look as if he were dead was a turn on. She found herself yearning for him more than she’d ever yearned for anyone. He dropped his head and explored her delicious body. His teeth pierced her waist gently, she gasped smiling and enjoying every moment of the little pain he inflicted upon her. Again there was a trail of blood making its way down the side of her body.

‘Shit!’ He licked up the drop and some colour returned to his skin. ‘God I love this!’

This book is a work of fiction. All names, characters, locations and incidents are products of author’s imagination, or have been used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons living or dead, locales or events is entirely coincidental.

    Chapter One

Umi tossed and turned. The nights weren’t her favourite times. The pillows and bedsheets were soaking wet. There were unseen monsters, things and people after her that tormented her most nights.

She ran through the jungle as fast as her feet could carry her. There were sounds all around. Sounds of living creatures in the jungle. She was partially dressed in skins. The crowd chased her with spears and burning logs.

    ‘Burn her! Burn the witch!’

Umi didn’t understand. How was it she was a witch when she’d never practised magic? Her life had been sheltered by the King her father and by her mother and she’d thought she was normal like everyone else. But this wasn’t the case. Her powers had been bound by a stronger witch the day Umi had been born. It was said that Umi would never be able to use her powers until she reached the age of twenty three. At twenty one, something had happened. The king was losing power and the Portuguese had landed on their territory. The king had made enemies by trading slaves and art, for bronze to these new people who had entered their land. There was a divide. And they were afraid that if Umi’s powers came to the surface the whole tribe would be lost.

It had been part of the curse. If they were to kill her the day before she turned twenty three, then that would be the end. Until the next time she was born, of course.

Here she was, running, running from a bunch of crazy humans who believed that she would be the end of them all.

‘No, please, please let me go!’ Umi tossed in her bed once again as the crowd of angry people gathered around her.

‘You must die! You must leave our land in peace!’ said one of the tribe’s men.

‘I haven’t done anything, please. You must leave, my father will have you all killed.’

‘Your father is no longer King. We made sure of it!’

They drew closer towards her. Tormenting her, speaking and shouting curse’s at her, and just as she was about to be burnt, something strange happened. It was fast, no one could see it or hear it, but there was something killing off those men and women, and they fell like dominos...

Umi shot up drenched! She looked around the room and realised it was all just a dream.

‘This is crazy,’ she whispered to herself, and dropped back into the bed. This had been happening for a while now.

The next morning she walked into the kitchen, kissed her mum and dad and made herself a coffee.

‘You’ve got that interview today, don’t you?’ asked Clarence.

‘I do.’ She smiled. ‘I was surprised I got an invite to one of the top firms. It’s odd. I’ve just got back from university.’

‘See it as a good thing love.’ Her mother smiled.

‘I do. I just...’ She wondered if she should tell her parents about the dream. It sounded silly to be telling them. She was a grown up now. Coming back to live with them had been a hard adjustment after being out on her own at university. But she needed somewhere to stay until she made enough to get a place of her own.

‘Just what?’ Felipe looked at his daughter.

Her parents had been very protective over her. They had been wary about sending her off to university. But they also knew that the curse would only lift just after she graduated. They’d also hoped to keep it a secret from her for the rest of her life. For once, at least in this lifetime, they wanted her to have a normal life. A life as a normal human being, with a family. There were no tribes to run from, they hadn’t practised magic for a long time. So far things were going well.

Umi sat down with her parents and dished some scramble egg and bacon. Clarence spoiled them every morning with a cooked breakfast.

‘I’ve been having some strange dreams. It sounds silly, but it’s the exact same dream every night, and I wake up at the exact same place. It’s just weird. And it feels so real.’

Felipe looked at his wife. There was unease all of a sudden.

‘What’s the dream about darling?’ asked Clarence.

‘I’m running away from some crazy tribe. They’re shouting and taunting me. They want to burn me for some reason.’

The couple nodded as they listened.

‘Just as I’m about to be burned by these crazy savages, something happens.’

    ‘What?’ asked Felipe.

‘I can’t explain it, but suddenly these people begin to drop like dominos. They fall. There’s something killing them, but I can’t see it. All I see are their bodies ripped apart, and that’s when I wake up.’

‘I see. That is a strange dream,’ said Felipe.

    ‘Yes it is.’ Clarence agreed.

‘What do you think it means dad? You’ve done something on dreams haven’t you?’

Felipe was an ancient history professor at a local university. He loved teaching it, since he’d been in these histories. Not that anyone knew, nor was it mentioned. As it is with history, not many black people or women were made mention of. Although there was little mention of him when he was king, but it would’ve been hard to identify him.

‘Not really love. But I could have a look into it.’

‘No it’s alright. I think it’s just stress. I think I’m worried about getting this job. I think they expect great things from me.’

‘Well, you were a great student so don’t worry about it.’ Her mother encouraged.

The couple were a little nervous. It was happening again. The dreams. Each time they reincarnated, and Umi was born again, the whole process would start again.

‘Gosh look at the time. I’ve got to go!’ She pushed back the seat.

    ‘You’ve barely touched your breakfast.’

‘I’m too nervous to eat. Love you guys.’ She kissed them both briefly on the cheek and then sped upstairs to retrieve her belongings.

They waited, and a few minutes later she rushed down again. ‘Wish me luck,’ she shouted as she headed for the door.

    ‘Good luck!’ said her mother.

The door shut and they gazed at each other.

    ‘It’s happening,’ said Clarence.

‘But how. Why is this happening now?’

‘I don’t know, but you might. She looked at him a little suspicious.

    ‘I don’t know anything.’

‘Do you think we should do the spell again? Get rid of every memory of her past that she has?’

‘Let’s give it a few more days. You know the problem with magic. If anyone around us senses it, we’re back to this whole war. I don’t want her a part of it.’

‘I agree. A few more days.’ She patted his hand. ‘I better get ready for work.’

He nodded. ‘Me too. I’ll be late home so don’t leave dinner for me.’

Clarence watched him a moment, opened and closed her mouth and instead nodded. It was pointless to bring anything up now.

Clarence was a nurse. A job she loved. If she couldn’t use her magic to heal, she at least wanted to help with modern medicine. She was a giver.

The couple kissed and parted ways. It was the beginning of a long road ahead, for all of them. They didn’t notice the man in the dark hoodie who had been watching from around the corner. He had to make sure it was them. It was. And the young woman who had just left the house, had that been her? He was certain it was. Abel smiled slightly, he’d finally found her.

    Two days before the interview.

Christian Blackbourne walked into the law firm and headed straight for the big boss’s office.

‘Who the hell are you?’ Gordon stood up.

Christian quickly pushed him back into the seat without a single touch.

‘What...who are you?’ The man’s eyes widened.

Christian smiled as he walked towards him. Tall, sexy, jet black hair, grey eyes and dressed in a thousand pound black suit.

‘I...’ He placed his hands on the man’s face and looked into his eyes. ‘I am the new CEO. You will be retiring, going away somewhere nice. Somewhere where the sun shines. You are in need of a tan. You will tell the board members at the staff meeting, and then you’ll will announce it to the members of staff. You will also say that there will be no arguing with you. You are after all the named person on the wall.’ He let go. ‘Now, welcome me.’ Christian smiled.

The man stood up and welcomed Christian to the firm. It was as if it was the most normal thing to do.

‘Thank you. I suggest you call a board meeting this afternoon. Things must move quickly.’

    ‘Yes. Yes of course.’

That afternoon a board meeting was called. Christian watched with amusement as the members argued about the sudden change, but the man’s word was final. It was his name on the wall, he made the decisions.

‘We must work fast,’ Christian had said to Dustin, his faithful right hand man. ‘Make changes to the list of new associate interviews. We must make sure she knows about the change as soon as possible.’

Dustin had done just that. It had been a last minute change. That was what Umi had been told. She found it strange that the firm had even heard about her. It only hired the best of the best, but she was assured that he’d got her name from her professor. That had been taken care of too.

In their world rules didn’t apply, they made their own. And with Christian in charge of the vampires in the city, the more the rules were broken. They had managed to stay away from the witch’s radar, but it seemed as though that wouldn’t last long. Christian was getting desperate. It was almost her birthday. And they all knew what that meant.

‘Are you ready for this sir?’ asked Dustin.

‘I’ve been ready for this for centuries.’ He picked up a picture of Umi from centuries ago. She still looked the same, the same beautiful brown eyes, her lovely curls and the softest heart he’d ever known. He’d fallen for her the moment he’d set eyes on her. But their love was not meant to be, not when his half breed brother Abel refused to leave her life. It was not only a battle for love, but for power, because with the witches power things would be so different. There had been a reason why Umi’s powers were always deemed a threat. She had always been running away from someone or something. It had all started as a prophecy and had continued throughout the centuries. If it was even true, there had never been a chance for them to find out. She was either dying or being killed or her powers had been bound.

‘Now once and for all we’ll have everything we need. It will not go wrong this time. I will not let it.’

    Dustin sighed.

‘Is there something you care to share?’ He put the framed picture down and continued to do up his tie.

    ‘Your brother.’

    ‘What about him?’

‘He’s here. He’s in the city.’

‘I’m quite aware of that. I was aware of it the day he set foot into the city.’

‘Why have you not spoken of this?’

‘My brother is the least of my worries.’

‘Are you sure about that? He’s been watching the girl.’

‘He would. He loves her. He won’t harm her, I can guarantee that.’

‘But he might expose her, and we don’t know why he’s here.’

‘Probably the same reason I am. For love and for power.’

‘Abel was never one for power.’

‘You don’t know my brother.’ He picked up his suit jacket and started for the
