    Chapter One

Ruby-Rae’s eyes flicked opened. Things weren’t as clear. She couldn’t tell where she was. There was a heaviness on her thighs. A couple of times she blinked to try and clear the blur that acted like a curtain in front of her eye. As the surroundings became clear, there was a dim light above her. Where she lay was hard and cold and her body ached. Ruby-Rae wanted to see what the hell was on her leg. With every little bit of strength, she lifted her body.

‘Jacob? Jacob! Jacob.’ She shook his lifeless body. ‘Jacob, please. Please wake up.’ Ruby-Rae was confused. She had no idea what had happened or where she was. She couldn’t remember what she’d been doing before she landed in this strange place. ‘Jacob! Oh god!’

Just as she was about to give up hope, he grunted.

    ‘Jacob!’

His eyes flickered as he came to. It took a while for him to understand where he was.

‘Fuck!’ He held onto his head. He felt as though he’d been hit with something heavy. ‘What the...Ruby?’

‘Jacob, thank god.’ She was just happy he was alive, but suddenly it hit her. She put her hand on her belly and realised something terribly wrong. ‘The baby! Jacob, where’s my baby! Where’s my baby?’

It took him a while to realise what she was saying. What the hell had happened?

‘Jacob!’ she shouted noticing that he was still not fully aware of what was going on around him. ‘The baby. The baby’s gone.’

He looked up into her eyes, and then down at her stomach. It was flatter.

    ‘Oh god!’ He remembered.

It had all been so sudden. The doctor had been a different doctor, he had checked on Ruby-Ray, left the room and returned with two men who knocked Jacob out.

The doctor had proceeded to stick a needle into Ruby-Rae’s neck and she was swiftly knocked out.

‘That bastard doctor. He took the baby.’

    ‘What?’

    ‘Do you remember what happened?’

She shook her head feeling empty inside. All she had wanted was her baby. She thought this was over, but it seemed as though there were more people after her. She was just a product to everyone and now their baby was being used as one too.

‘I can’t go through this. I can’t do this. They should’ve let me die.’ She held onto her stomach. ‘It’s too painful, I can’t.’

‘You don’t mean that.’ He took her into his arms and hugged her tight. ‘You’re a strong woman and I know you will do whatever it takes to get our child back. I will be right by your side.’

‘How can we do that when we don’t even know where to start? We don’t even know where we are.’ She burst into tears. It hurt so much she wanted to curl up and die.

‘Don’t lose hope my love. I love you so much. We’ve been through so much together. We will get through this. And then...’ He pulled back and looked into her eyes. ‘When we find our darling child, we will go far away and no one will ever be able to find us again.’

‘They always find us. We will never be safe anywhere.’

‘Yes, we will. I will make sure of it. You can’t give up now. You just can’t.’ He took her back into his arms and held her tight. Ruby-Rae shut her eyes and enjoyed the closeness. It was comforting to know that she had him even though it felt like the worst time of her live. ‘We need to get out of here. Can you do that?’

‘I don’t know Jacob. My body feels as though it’s broken.’

‘Let me have a look at you.’ He slowly lifted the dirty shirt that she’d been dressed into. ‘You don’t have any stiches. It looks as though you’ve healed complete.’

‘What do you mean?’ she was a little confused.

‘It’s like...It’s like you were cut up, but your body quickly dealt with that.’

    ‘I’m self-healing?’

‘I think so. You have slight bruising but that’s all.’

    ‘Why didn’t they take me?’

‘Honey, I don’t know. But what we do know is that our daughter seems a lot more important.’

‘What are they going to do with her?’ She was in tears all over again.

‘That’s what we need to find out and we need to get her back.’

She was feeling hopeless. This had been the final straw. Fighting for herself seemed like the only option, but now she just didn’t feel like fighting anymore when she knew she should’ve wanted it more than anything else.

‘I’m just not feeling great. I feel as though they’ve taken everything from me. Without my baby, I have nothing.’

‘You have me.’ He lifted her face by the chin and gazed into her eyes. ‘I love you. You have me. Please don’t give up on me now.’

She swallowed back hard. It was supposed to be a joyful time, not a time of pain and misery.

‘We’ve got to move.’ It took a lot of doing but he finally managed to get to his feet. ‘Come on my love.’ He held out his hand for her to take. She gazed at it a moment, then held out her hand. ‘We will get through his. I promise.’ He helped her to her feet.

It took her a moment to adjust. Even though her body had been aching, all it took were a few adjustments and her body felt like new. It wasn’t so for Jacob. His body did ache and it wasn’t in the business of healing itself. He still had a terrible headache, but he would battle through it. He was still in his suit, but it was a mess, and Ruby-Rae had a pair of ratty jeans on. She couldn’t understand why they didn’t put her back in her clothes, but then again, her clothes wouldn’t fit her. She was no longer pregnant.

He searched his pockets hoping to find something. It was a slim chance that he would have his mobile phone. Just like he thought, there was nothing in his pockets.

‘Do you have anything in your pockets?’ he asked.

‘No, I don’t.’ She didn’t have to search. She would’ve felt a phone if there was one.

‘Okay, we will find a way.  Let’s just get out of here.’ He struggled a little, but she walked fine. Her body had adjusted and it was if nothing had happened to her at all. Even though this was the case, the hole inside her heart was so huge that no physical wellness could fix it. She just wanted her baby, but she didn’t have any hope of finding the baby.  She just wanted to give up and die, which was unlike her.

‘I wonder why they just didn’t kill us,’ she said.

‘Perhaps they were hoping we would die, perhaps it was all done in a hurry. Whatever the reason, I think we should be happy we’re alive.’

She wasn’t, but she wasn’t going to say that. Instead she just kept walking. They finally reached an exit. The light was blinding the minute they stepped out. They were in the middle of nowhere,
