    Meditation - Tori Lyons

    INTRODUCTION

Stress kills. I’m not just talking about killing your creativity or killing your mood. Stress can actually kill you. It is often a cited factor in heart disease, heart attack, and even strokes. This is because stress has physical effects. Stress causes your body to release certain chemicals. Now, in times of danger, these chemicals, which create your body’s fight or flight response are good. The added adrenaline in our system can make us more alert and help us survive a dangerous situation. However, too much stress can burn out your adrenal glands, raise your blood pressure, and can make you have sleeping problems (just to name a few of the issues). Chronic stress is absolutely a risk to your health.

    Meditation[1]

Although we live in a world that makes all of us, at some point, feel the need to just keep going, it’s important that we learn to reduce our level of stress. Many people choose to self-medicate with food, alcohol, or drugs. By drugs, I’m not just referencing illegal substances. I’m also talking about the increasing dependence upon antidepressants (many are prescribed to help with anxiety disorders) and medications like Valium and Xanax. The problem is that many of the ways that we choose to cope with stress can lead to other problems: obesity, alcoholism, and even becoming dependent upon a drug.

Many people have chosen to look into more natural ways to alleviate their stress: meditation. According to Harvard neuroscientist Sara Lazar, meditation relieves stress and it can help rewire your brain. So, why would you want to rewire you brain? Well, for the same reason that people go to therapy: to learn how to cope better with future stressors.

There are many forms of meditation. The goal is to find at least one form of meditation that will work well for you. You will have to practice at it. As easy as meditation sounds, it often is more difficult in practice simply because of how our brains are wired. When we try to take the time to sit quietly, we automatically begin to deal with thoughts about what we should be doing or what we still need to do today, this week, this month, or even this year. That’s because our brains simply don’t know how to function when we try to just be still. So, when this happens to you as you begin your meditation journey, don’t worry too much about it. You’re not broken. You’re not doing it wrong. It happens to everyone in the beginning. With time, you’ll notice a decrease in those thoughts.

I’d like to quickly discuss one more thing about meditation here in the Introduction. Regardless of religion, meditation can work for you. Meditation isn’t some sort of metaphysical new-age teaching (although it will work for you if you are interested in those things). You don’t have to convert to Buddhism or any other religion to use it. You don’t have to believe in God. You won’t go to Hell if you’re Christian and choose to meditate. Meditation is simply a period of time that you will participate in at least once per day to just be still. If you’d like, you can choose something to focus on. It could be a Bible verse if you are Christian. It could be a positive affirmation. You could simply focus on counting your breath (which I will discuss with you later in this ebook). This is just a period of time that you take to simply just sit and be. Past that, it’s whatever you make of
