Prepper's Guide to Home Defense Defend Your Home and Maintain Security in Dire Situations: Prepper's Guide
()
About this ebook
Home defense isn’t a joke. With over three and a half million home invasions per year, an intruder could enter your home at any time—day or night. The media is rife with stories of robbery, home invasion, and sexually assaults. It isn’t a case of fear mongering, but simply awareness.
In most cases, home invaders don’t even know their target. But their target isn’t completely random; targets are chosen due to several key features of their home. In this eBook, we’ll show you how you can scare home invaders away before they can ever harm you or your family.
We’ll also discuss passive ways to protect yourself—the construction of home defenses that keep burglars out and slow them down. Whether you’re looking for ways to protect yourself from the common criminal elements, or if you’re looking to protect yourself in worst case, collapse of civilization scenarios, we have you covered; we believe everyone has their own level of preparation, and we’ll help get your house defense ready regardless of your end goal.
We also know that not all people are the same. Most home defense guides out there treat the reader as though they live in a quaint suburban home with all the money in the world—that isn’t true for most people, and it certainly isn’t true for the author. We’ll describe ways to protect yourself regardless of your situation. Country homes, suburban homes, or urban apartments all have different needs for home defense, and we’ll cover them all.
Inside You Will Learn:
- Proper Preparation for Home Defense
- Different Layers of Security in Your Home

Prepper's Guide to Home Defense Defend Your Home and Maintain Security in Dire Situations - Marcus Patton
Introduction
You’re sitting at home with your family, watching the latest movie on Netflix. Your children are sprawled out on the couch, enthralled by the movie while you’re quietly typing on your computer—not accomplishing much, just happy to have the time to yourself after a long day at work. Your wife mentions it’s getting late, but the children complain. You promise they can stay until the end of the movie.
Suddenly, you hear the sound of glass breaking. Heavy footsteps and multiple voices come from the back door. Immediately, all color drains from your wife’s face, and every family member turns to you with wide eyes and fear on their face—what do you do?
It’s a frightening tale but is it likely? In the U.S. alone, there were more than 3.6 million house break-ins every year. The U.S. Department of Justice reports 38% of assaults and 60% of rapes are committed during a home invasion, with one home in every five likely to have a break-in or burglary. And despite a decrease in general crime, the FBI reports that burglaries are actually on the rise.
There are worse situations yet; when a natural disaster strikes, or when civil unrest occurs, your home might be the only form of defense you have. Perhaps you have a family to protect, or perhaps you only want to protect yourself. Regardless, in the direst circumstance when even the government has collapsed, having a defensible home is an asset. Fifteen years ago, this might have sounded farfetched—consider, next time, Hurricane Katrina, and the absolute lawlessness that arose.
Whether you’re a pragmatic prepper or preparing yourself for the worst scenario imaginable, this book has you covered. We’ll discuss what you need to know about critical home defense: preparing your home to reduce the likelihood of being a target, defense solutions for reinforcing your home against assault or invasions, the best offensive weaponry available, and developing escape plans when all else fails.
We realize that situations vary, so we’ve divided our advice into rural, suburban, or urban settings depending on where you live. In some instances, the advice might apply to all homes—but where it matters, we point out the choices you have.
Aimed at beginners and experts alike, we seek to set a solid foundation for home defense, and then build upon tried and true methods of securing your home against common threats, and extrapolating onward for worst case scenarios. The first chapter alone will help anyone in the modern world secure their home.
Knowing is half the battle; without the ability to predict when your home might be at risk, preparation is very much an obligation. When your family is looking at you with fear on their faces, be prepared with your plan of action. Read on and discover how you can keep lives safe.

In this chapter, you will learn:
How homes are targeted in traditional burglaries/home invasions
Security as an integrated process
Ways to reduce your targetable footprint
Becoming a Target
It’s important to realize that homes often aren’t randomly chosen for burglaries or home invasions—in fact, it’s quite the opposite. In traditional break-ins, criminals will often observe a targeted home or neighborhood, seeking particular characteristics that make a home an optimal objective with the greatest vulnerabilities. By becoming aware of those particular common characteristics, you can reduce the chance your home will be targeted.
For an assailant to choose your home as an objective, it must exhibit a greater number of these characteristics than others in his particular area of operation. For your protection, compare these characteristics, to see how likely your home is to fall prey to these criminals.
COVER.
If you think like a criminal, the one thing you want to avoid is someone seeing you do whatever nefarious acts you are involved in, and you hope to find ways to avoid that. Finding a home with a lot of obscuring trees and shrubs, or even fences and walls to block the view from the outside will make your home a ripe target, as it is easier for perpetrators to hide what they are doing.
There have been many cases of people purchasing property shrouded in trees or even behind walls; in a realistic scenario these visibility barriers will only help to hide a thief and make his entrance into your home easier. With enough coverage, a thief might easily drive a truck to your home, back the vehicle into the cover, and spend as much time as necessary loading all of your valuables.
A second consideration would be that of darkness. The less lighting shed on your home’s exterior, the more likely it will be considered for targeting. There are enough alternatives for personal lighting. A criminal will revel in the darkness your obscuring foliage and fencing can provide while darkness around your home gives the perpetrators places from which to operate.
Privacy Vs. Security
All of the media hype that suggests our privacy is under assault has led us to try to shut out the prying eyes of our neighbors. But in the case of home security, the opposite is true. Those very eyes one fears will peer into our private lives may actually help preserve our lives, so consider which you treasure most; privacy or security. The one almost always is in opposition to the other.
Access Points
When assessing a house, beyond cover, a criminal looks for easy access. That doesn’t necessarily mean an open door; even a reinforced metal door is an easy point of access if the house has adequate cover. To be easily accessible, the point of entry is either easily and quietly opened or hidden from view.
Either way, access to the property serves two purposes; it offers
