The desire to be safe in our own homes runs high on our list of needs. Safety drives the important decisions of all animals. We humans, however, expend a great deal of energy and money protecting ourselves and our belongings. High-end security systems, window bars, locking gates, guard dogs, and security lights are all great steps toward that final goal of having a castle secure from the criminality. We contrast our need to drive away potential dangers with our desire to have a home that appears welcoming — lining the walls with concertina wire would make for an unpleasant décor. Instead, consider something as innocuous as a houseplant to keep a watchful eye on your perimeter and still look beautiful and inviting.
