    FORWARD

When this manuscript was first drafted the author presented it to the director of a woman's organization, one that helped victims of rape. The author was curious as to what that individual thought about it. The letter below was their reply. (Since the individual is no longer employed there the author withdrew their name at the end for the sake of personal privacy).

WHEN I WAS FIRST HANDED Mr. Lyon’s manuscript by Jeff, a friend and co-worker, and asked to look it over; I must admit my first reaction was—Oh no, not another self-defense book written for women by a big tough ex-paratrooper.

I’ve always been amused that self-defense books for women seem to be written by ex-marines, ex-police, etc. that have been trained to disable or kill an attacker with a single blow. They also seem to be built like a sculptor’s block of granite (before the chisel ever touches it). Being trained and so physically powerful themselves, I’ve wondered if they could comprehend the powerless, intimidation and fear of the crime of rape that women feel.

Although Mr. Lyon fit my mental image of a women’s defense advocate, I also found him to be much more than that. He is truly a sensitive and caring person with a genuine desire to help people. Perhaps his own tragic experience has contributed to his heightened awareness of the emotional effects of rape, not only to the victim herself, but to friends and loved ones.

Rape often has far reaching effects after the fact; marriages end in divorce, families are at odds, and ever present is the question WHY? In searching for the answer, we have unfortunately looked to the victim and then pointed the finger of blame at her. What did you do to cause this to happen to you?

Society in general has always been unwilling to deal with crimes of rape and incest. If we can place the blame on the victim then we can forget it; after all she deserved it or she asked for it. The time has come to point the finger at the person who committed the crime, not the victim.

The secret crime of incest has existed for a long time and is only recently being talked about openly. Most often a child is molested by someone he or she knows.

We must be willing to talk to our children about the possibility of this happening to them. Children as young as four years old can understand the difference between good and bad touching, or good and bad secrets. We can give them permission to say no to an adult who might want to touch them in this way and tell them it’s O.K. to talk about it; to tell someone if it happens to them. Children do not seduce their parents or relatives, nor do they imagine or lie about molestation.

These myths bring us back to placing the blame on the victim. Who is at fault, a six-year-old child or an adult? In not talking to children about these matters we are not keeping them innocent, we are keeping them ignorant; therefore, making them more vulnerable to victimization.

Thank you, Mr. Lyon, for this most informative book. I believe the more aware we are of sexual assault and related crimes, the less likely we are of becoming victims. If you or someone you know is assaulted, I urge you to contact your local Rape Crisis Center and to report it to your Police Department.

    DISCLAIMER

    Please Read this Caution!

While many Americans assume that owning a firearm is the simple easy step method of protection against crime, it should be pointed out that it's easy to become drawn into a false sense of security. Even a well-armed and highly trained police officer or military soldier can get into trouble and become a victim themselves.

Common sense preventive measures are your best line of defense to inhibit a crime from happening to you or a loved one. The ultimate security advice lies in exercising safety precautions to avoid high risk situations such as walking alone at night, gathering with the wrong crowd in high-crime areas, failure to bolt your doors and lock windows, and not safeguarding your personal information, etc.

Therefore, the best advice of all is to become more security conscious and avoid potentially hazardous situations. Decrease your chances of becoming a target, and you probably won’t be the next crime victim on tomorrow’s news. The more you think about safety, the safer you will become. Stay alert and stay alive! Don’t let someone ruin your life! Learn how not to become a victim thru common sense prevention.

Remaining alert in order to stay alive does not mean becoming paranoid or even obsessive about safety, and locking yourself up in a living quarter in fear of venturing out into the world is not the solution. There is a sane balance which is achieved thru ordinary daily reminders and simple

checklists. For example, do you always remember to lock the doors of both your home and vehicle?

Suggestions throughout this guide are based on reliable information presented by noted safety, defense and security experts, many of which have either a police or military background. The author accepts no responsibility if the reader chooses to arm themselves. Some of the methods presented in this book are highly lethal and should never be practiced without correct adult supervision. It is strongly advised that you check with your local police, fire, and other emergency departments for updates, legalities and clarification of all safety, defense and security procedures presented within this book.

    May God bless,

    The Author

    APARTMENT

    The Secure Renter .

APARTMENT LIVING IS a community of strangers existing under one roof. Opportunities for a variety of criminal activities increases under certain conditions. Renters should review the following security suggestions in order to prevent crime and increase overall safety.

    SELECTING AN APARTMENT

__ Determine if all entrances are controlled by a key.

__ Is the building, parking lot, or parking garage well-lit at night?

__ Do the units have deadbolt locks and peepholes?

__ Is the swimming pool fenced in and the gate locked?

__ Is the exercise room and laundry room controlled by a key?

__ How do you feel about the overall environment?

__ Do you feel comfortable when alone in various areas?

__ Does the manager seem conscientious and reliable?

__ Would the manager allow you to re-key unit locks?

__ Consult police if you question the crime rate in that area.

__ Is that area notorious for burglary and other crimes?

    THE ENVIRONMENT

__ Use an initial on an intercom board/mail box instead of first name.

__ Don’t leave notes on doors or bulletin boards. Burglars read too.

__ Do not hold the door open for strangers. Inform them that it is strict policy to ring for the manager.

__ Instruct your children on correct procedure for admitting people.

__ Report burned out lights in the area to the manager.

__ Avoid using the laundry by yourself or at night.

__ Don't leave your washables unattended in the laundry room.

__ Report strangers loitering around the apartment grounds.

__ Be careful of the image you portray at a swimming pool. Swimsuits that flatter a figure may attract the wrong type of individual.

__ Keep your cell phone handy and set 911 for emergencies on speed dial.

    PARKING AREAS

__ Keep your vehicle locked at all times.

__ Park in an area with the best lighting.

__ Never leave valuables in your car.

__ Record the model and serial number of electronics in your car.

__ Conceal valuables in a car from plain view by using a blanket, sheet, tarp, coat, or towels.

__ Always walk promptly, confidently and without delay from parking areas to your unit.

__ Avoid underground parking areas when alone and at night.

__ Leave immediately if you see suspicious persons loitering in the parking area.

__ Report suspicious activities to your manager or the police.

    YOUR UNIT

__   Have your door locks re-keyed when moving in.

__  Don't rely on door chains. They can be easily forced open.

__  A deadbolt lock may be the best security for all entrances.

__  A door viewer (peephole) should be on the entrance.

__   Lock doors at all times, even during laundry/picking up mail.

__  Instruct your children not to admit strangers.

__  Instruct children not to reveal personal info to strangers.

__    Sliding glass doors are a burglar's favored point of entry.

__    Use dowel or a lock on the inside track of sliding glass doors.

__  Install a lock to prevent the siding door from being lifted out.

__  Keep your patio or balcony well lit after dark.

__   Keep valuables hidden from prying eyes of strangers.

__  Never show off valuables to neighbors. Word can travel.

__  Don't keep large amounts of cash in your apartment.

__  Close curtains and shades, especially after dark.

__   Get on a buddy watch system with a neighbor.

__  Keep emergency numbers by your telephone and on your cell phone.

__  Keep a working fire extinguisher and 1st aid kit on hand.

__  Keep a working flashlight handy for power outages.

__   Avoid opening your door for strangers such as solicitors.

__  Never reveal to strangers that you live alone. If a stranger arrives, pretend your companion is at the neighbors or say that they are napping or bathing.

__  Double check doors and windows before leaving your unit.
